FTSOY - Keeping the Commandments

Contributed by: Helena  stephankleinlein@prodigy.net

The best object lesson that I have done is really done with a poster. Look in the FHE manual put out by the Church, on page 8 is exactly what you want. It is a comparison of Satan's Plan and Heavenly Father's Plan.

There are 2 shapes--one is an hour glass, and it shows how restrictive the commandments can make you feel: Not lying, not stealing, staying pure etc (The hour glass gets narrower and narrower)--then the hour glass widens and it represents the benefits from doing all those things: Having a good job, friends who trust you, a solid relationship with a spouse etc., leading to Eternal Happiness.

The other shape is a diamond. This shows how doing whatever you want might make you feel free: Lying, smoking, Being lazy etc (The shape widens). Then the shape begins to narrow as you realize the fruits of your choices: Broken relationships, bad health, no one trust you etc., leading to Everlasting Misery.

I took 2 poster boards and drew each diagram on one board. (I was so thrilled at the result that I laminated them). I actually added my own choices and consequences to the chart. Once a year, I bring it out for a reminder lesson (both at FHE and at YW). It affects everyone who sees it because it is true to life, and everyone can "get it".

So really there is no need to "work out all the details", someone in our Church has already done it for us, very effectively. There is no better way to point out how our Father in Heaven's commandments really keep us free--in a way that the youth will identify with!
