Good Deed Basket

Last night we made our mothers day gifts. We took the idea of the journal jar and changed it to a Good Deeds jar. I printed off a 2 and 3/4 by 4 and 1/4 sections of tag board with little ideas to make mom day brighter. (You can get about 6 notes to the page) Most of them had to do with good deeds for herself, her family, or friends. Nothing was hard to do.

Example: BE KIND TO YOURSELF

When the day is not going your way and your feeling down, be kind to yourself. Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend who is feeling down. Remind yourself of Heavenly Fathers comfort and care by reading your favorite scripture. And most of all talk to Heavenly Father about it.

(Then there was a scripture printed at the end - this one was from 1 Peter 5:7.

(Example) BE THE BEST FRIEND YOU CAN BE

"A friend is someone who understand your past, believes in your future, and accepts you today just the way you are." --Anonymous

Make a commitment to be that kind of friend by writing these words in your journal "I will be the kind of friend who loves unconditionally" Then write about someone in your life who is like that. Sometimes there are things to do with a family member or even a silly little joke to share with someone.

(Example) Share this riddle and give away a giggle: What color is rain? (water color)

Then the girls decorated the top sections of each note card with small stamp art or markers, folded them and put them in a quart wide mouth jar. The ring top was stuffed and raffia ribbon tied around to keep that country look. Then a tag with a poem was added to the outside.

This jar is filled with notes for you,
To start your morning,
And last all day through.

Some will make you laugh,
Others touch your heart,
As you read and do them
"Good Deeds" you'll impart.

Being a mom is a hard thing to do.
But you do it so well;
I want to be just like you.

As I watch you give,
(sometimes wiping away tears)
I know it's because of you,
That "Love" is always near.

This activity could be used as an activity night for the girls in regards to good works. And instead of using a jar you can use a crate berry basket with a little piece of material inside. I even thought of doing this with fortune cookies and the notes placed inside them and then get the take-out box from your local Chinese restaurant to hold them. The poem would have to be changed. Maybe only use the first two stanzas. Or it could read, "My future will hold many good deeds".
