Family Scripture Study

I've received several requests for ideas on my family scripture study process. Here are some ideas in brief:

Our family focus for scripture study (ss) is - "That scripture study must be fun, must be time effective, and must be applicable to daily living". The activities, fill in the blanks, look for (words, phrases, etc), pix etc. is for all to have fun. Often the activities also focuses on a principle for the day. Miraculously, this has worked out that way. We've agreed on 15 mins a day for ss. Sometimes we may go over to 20 minutes, but rarely.  Preparation time is about 10-15 min for me. In some days, it's about 5 min! First, I read the ten verses beforehand. If the verses are long, we may read less to allow for activity time. Sometimes I read these verses about 3x before I get my inspiration on what we can use as an activity to help our family on that day.  You'll be surprise how your mind just tune in to something that meets your need that day.

Example -

Mosiah 2:1-10

Aids

1 x pix of our temple posted on the wall or stand
12 cubed desk papers (different colours) on the floor.

Requirement -

- Each family member to make 2 tents (fold paper into triangle shape and stand).

- Each family member to write their family name on their tent. (The children are imagining their future family).

- As we read the verses, we org our tents with doors facing the temple.

Discussion - Eternal families the very purpose of temples.

Mosiah 11:11-19 -

Aid was an office chair that rises and falls with the use of a lever. The chair was at its lowest level and our 4 year old was King Noah. He dressed in his dressing gown with a cardboard crown (an old one that was thrown around the house for sometime!)

As we read the verses and came across the riches of the world that King Noah loved, one of the kids will lift the lever a level higher. This went on until we came to verse 19, where it was lifted up to its highest level. To indicate King Noah and his people being lifted-up!

The family was to focus on things that lift us up and report at night! This was an awakening for father and I!

Mosian 11:20-29 -  Fill in the blanks.

This is what I typed on a piece of paper ..... Because this is a reasonably easy exercise, I didn't give it to them at the beginning of the ss. I gave it at the end and gave them 3 mins to fill the blanks. They were to name the verse. They got hersheys kiss each for participation.  King Noah and his people desperately needed to do this, " . . . . they shall be brought to bondage . . .."

_ _ _ _ _ _ (repent - v. 23).

The focus for the day ...... Repent.

I hope this answers some of your questions. Have fun.  For those of you who want to give it a go, I say go for it. Don't be disappointed if you can't think an activity one day. That may be the day that is reserved for you to bear witness of our Heavenly Father's great love for us. I remember when reading Mosiah 1:1-10 - all I had was a journal and we discussed the importance of keeping a record! On 1 Nephi 20:1-10 -

We had to look for body parts that stumble us and draw us from God. When we come to those body parts, we were to point to them. (v.4 brow (brass), neck (iron), v.6 eyes (didn't see), v.8 ears (hard of hearing), v.9 brain ..... For little children, you may wish to print some cliparts that help them participate. Whatever your family needs, the Lord will help you.

One of the greatest blessings I've received from doing this, is that I am reading the BoM daily. As an early morning seminary teacher, I don't get much time this year because we're studying the Old Testament, but between teaching YSA SS lesson on Sundays and our family scripture study, I'm keeping up. Give it a go.
