Stand As A Witness & In His Hands

Greetings Sisters--

I thought I'd share a couple of poems I wrote for our New Beginnings Program this past spring. First I'll describe how we decorated our Cultural Hall for our reception after our main program in the chapel.

I made 7 life-size silhouettes of young women; each in a different pose to coincide with each stanza of my poem. Also, each one was a different value color. I made these by first- doing an outline of each "model" on a large sheet of bulletin board paper -- the fadeless kind from School Stuff. ( I bought it by the foot). Then, I cut out this silhouette and glued it onto a 3 ft. wide piece of sturdy cardboard (bought at Aaron Bros. Art Mart) and then cut it out again so only the colored silhouette of the girl was seen. ( I did keep the bottom third to half intact to make the silhouettes sturdy to be able to stand alone with a triangular piece of cardboard taped along the back to make it "stand" alone). So, when they were done it looked like a row of life-size paper dolls standing in a row.

Then, I printed my poem out on my computer and placed each stanza with each silhouette.

"Stand as a Witness"

(1st silh. white/dance pose): As Young Women, you stand in many places --
Transitioning from childhood in blue jeans and your braces.
Some of you are dancers --
agile on your toes.

(2nd silh. blue/model pose): Some of you are models --
and cast a striking pose.

(3rd silh. red/softball batter pose): Some of you are into sports --
softball, soccer and gymnastics.

(4th green/drama queen pose): Some of you love Theater --
Your performance was fantastic!

(5th orange/ leading music pose): Some of you have a gift for music --
play piano and love to sing.

(6th yellow/artist pose): Some of you are into art --
creating is your thing!

(7th purple/reading book pose): And some of you love writing--
a budding authoress.

But, remember young sisters,
Whoever you are,
Whatever you do,
Always Stand as a Witness.

The second poem was written to be given with the gift we gave each girl. This was a black and white picture of each girl superimposed into a picture of a hand. So, it looks as though she is sitting in the hand of the Lord. This was a Laurel Project for a Young Woman in another Ward.

"In His Hands"
a poem for Young Women
by Shelly Young-Nichols

In His hands the power to form this mortal sphere
And tenderly He blessed and sent me here
To freely choose all for myself
The path of Truth and Righteousness.

In His hands, Heavenly Father's plan was clear
And at His birth did man and beast stand still to hear
Harold Angels proclaim the joy
The Son of God, this baby boy.

And the earth did turn and time did pass
His earthly ministry began at last
To free us all from sin and pain
That we might live with Him again.

In His hands the power to heal
The deaf to hear, the blind to see,
The dead He raised, made demons flee,
And calmed the storm on Galilee.

In His hands they drove great nails of pain
But they could not His power contain
For us He drank the bitter cup
That we might all be lifted up.

A daughter of God, of infinite worth
I know I have a mission on earth
Embrace and stand for truth and light
In His hands I'll trust my life.

We have saved our silhouettes to use for our WW Celebration next month. Each Ward in our Stake will decorate a room (at the Stake Center) with the "Stand as a Witness" theme.

I hope I have described things clearly enough. Hope this is of help to anyone who need some ideas

Every blade of grass,
And every flake of snow,
Are just a wee bit different,
There's no two alike, you know.

For something small like grains of sand
To each gigantic star,
Each one was made with this in mind
To be just what they are.

How foolish then to imitate,
How useless to pretend,
When each one of us come from a mind
Whose ideas never end.

There'll be just one of me
To show what I can do.
And likewise you should feel very proud
There's only one of you!!!

No woman {yw} was ever quite like you.  The Lord made only one, without carbons.  You are not repeated and not repeatable.

The chance of there ever being someone identical to you must be compared to a number so high it doesn't even have a name; it would have to be written as a 1 followed by 9,031 zeros.

No one else can do what the Lord sent you to mortality to do. The value of what you have to contribute will come through the expression of your own personality, that particular spark of the divine that makes you unique, setting you off from every living creature. The mark you leave on the world, on the hearts and minds of others is as distinct as your thumbprint.
