Chocolate Covered Pretzels

These are so easy, cute, and yummy! We did some last year with the different filled Hershey's Kisses...peanut butter and caramel are really fabulous!

A really easy way to do this is to melt some chocolate chips or chocolate bark (the blocks of chocolate you can get for making chocolate candies) in a double boiler or even the microwave (but do it slowly and stir often). Just dip the pretzels (the long pretzel rods work great) and lay them out on waxed paper. My DD tried putting them on a cooling rack to drip off but they stuck really bad. You can drizzle them with melted colored candy melts (red, green and white look neat) or caramel, sprinkle them with sprinkles, or even double dip them in more than one color of chocolate. They're so fun and easy.

I like the idea of doing the pretzels and combining it with a Personal Progress activity. Or maybe making bunches of them, putting them in a cute Christmas mug (love the Dollar Store!) and delivering them to some of your inactives as part of the activity....

You might also try a variation on the chocolate dipped pretzel. Something we love to make are "pretzel turtles." Spray a cookie sheet or line it with parchment. Spread some mini pretzels out on a cookie sheet. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees. Unwrap enough chocolate candies for each pretzel (Rolos or Hershey Kisses). Place a chocolate candy in the center of each pretzel & bake for 5 to 6 minutes. You just want the candy nice & soft, not melted all the way. I have used white chocolate kisses & milk chocolate--the white chocolate melts much faster. Take the cookie sheet out of the oven & gently press one M&M into the center of the chocolate to squish the chocolate down a bit. Refrigerate for about 15 minutes--they are easier to pick up when cooled. These look really nice & they are yummy. They also freeze well. A good treat to make w/even the little ones! Desiree

(Another Recipe)

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 (10 ounce) packages pretzels
  • 1 tablespoon heavy whipping cream
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • Assorted toppings: colored sprinkles, chopped nuts, small candies, toasted coconut, cookie crumbs, colored sugars (all optional)

DIRECTIONS

  1. Melt chocolate and cream in double boiler over low heat, stirring constantly.
  2. Dip pretzels one at a time quickly to coat while mixture is still very warm. Place pretzels on wax paper to set and cool.
  3. Drizzle some dipped pretzel rods with contrasting color or flavor of melted chips.  (Drizzle melted chocolate from spoon while rotating pretzel to get even coverage.)
  4. Place decorated pretzels on prepared wire rack; let stand until set.  Do not refrigerate.
