Sisters,
Thought I'd share what I found about translating the yw values into Hawaiian. Just so you
understand, these are not all literal translations, because in some cases there is just no
exact word for a particular value. I did use my cousin as a resource (he is a native of
Niihau, an island where only hawaiians are allowed to live, and who speaks and teaches the
language)
We tried our best, so here goes....
FAITH.....
Mana'o'i'o (Ma-Nah-oh-ee-oh)
DIVINE NATURE....
1- A'Akua (in the nature of God)
2- Ke Aloha No Ke Akua (love for God)
I thought either one would work.
INDIVIDUAL WORTH.....
Kanaka Wai Wai (Ka-nah-ka vai vai)
(worthy or wealthy man/person)
KNOWLEDGE....
Naauao (Nah-ow-ah-o) this is a tongue twister, literally this means guts, as in your gut
feeling, what you know.
ike laulaha (ee-kay La-ooh-la-ha) another word for knowledge
CHOICE AND ACCOUNTABILITY....
Koho pono (Ko-hoe po-no) means righteous choice
Koho a me kuleana (ko-hoe ah may ku-lei-ah-na) means choice and responsibility
GOOD WORKS....
Hana Maika'i (Ha-nah My-ka-ee)
INTEGRITY.....
Ho'omanawanui (Ho-oh-ma-na-vah-new-ee) this is the closest I could get to integrity,
this means patience, steadfastness, fortitude, courage or perserverance (pretty close Huh?)
And finally, in case any one is interested this is the name of the church.
Ho'omana o Iesu Kristo o na Po'e Ho'ano o na La Hope Nei (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints)
note: remember all vowels are short
Mahalo to you all,
Malama Pono
