| Contributed by: Chris ruby@lewiston.com I just finished making "packet-covers" for the new
PP books.
- First I took the PP book, the Journal and the STSOY
book and had them rebound with white spiral binding. The front and the back cover only, I
had laminated with a very hard laminate to make them firm.
- Purchased very heavy gauge Clear vinyl, and
"Periwinkle" vinyl to match the books. The cover is clear on the outside, and
clear on the inside front cover so you can read The Living Christ.....On the back inside
cover, I've lined it first with clear, then a curved pocket that goes from the inside
corner 3/4 up to the outside edge. Then on top of that is another pocket made from a sheer
wired thick ribbon that has small flowers on it that almost EXACTLY match, the pictures of
the flowers within the book, and then lined it with a light green gingham checked ribbon,
very similar to the pattern on Sis. Naudaulds book "Write home soon", that is
very similarly patterned like the new PP books.!!! It is way too cute.
THEN, I took the back cover of the PP book, and it was actually used for the back cover of
the entire book. The back cover of the journal is just white on the other side, so I took
it and had it laminated, cut out the middle on either side of the emblem, including the
flower, punched a hole in the top, and tied in a periwinkle thin ribbon to use as a
bookmarker, it tucks perfectly into the ribbon pocket when not in use into the back of the
book-set :)......and if that weren't enough, I sewed in a small vinyl periwinkle pen
holder loop on the inside back cover and then made a vinyl tab to be able to close
the covered book-set and it hooks to a piece of Velcro on the front of the book.
To top it off, I hand sewed a handpainted flower button that is none else than
PERIWINKLE!!! on top of the closing tab so that the Velcro wouldn't show!!!!
I did two of them, each with a different front button, so that each of my daughters
could identify them easily without having to scribble their name on the outside of it.
They will be getting them when they get home after their New Beginnings evening. THEY are
going to love them!!!!
Time taken??? About a day to figure it out and purchase, and another day to sew them
up. Cost about $10-15 each, you wouldn't have to use satin thread, or fancy buttons or add
the extra ribbon pocket.....although that's what really make them cute.
My sister just suggested I put another pocket on the outside of the book that is clear
with some of the leftover vinyl......so here goes......oh, and
if that weren't enough, the clear vinyl is sewn with this really cool satin periwinkle
thread :)

Our area has jean purses for sale....they take a jean
pant leg and cut it off the length you want your purse, the hem is the top of your purse
and the
other end is stitched shut...the remainder of the pant is cut into a long strip for the
strap probably 4" across by the length you want (fold in half - right sides together
- stitch longwise and turn - stitch to the sides of the bag. They are decorated with
braid, rick rack and other assorted trims. Really cute and something they could do
themselves and something they might even use.
You could also teach them to do embroidery on them.
