Personal Progress-Powerful Potential

Personal Progress is a type and shadow. Read Matt 25:21.
Personal Progress is an attitude. Read D&C 6:8.
Personal Progress can build or create relationships with parents. Read D&C 50:10.
Personal Progress needs a fresh approach. D&C 5: 34.
Personal Progress is about success. Read D&C 29:34.
Personal Progress should be personal. Read D&C 6:16.
Personal Progress develops leadership. Read D&C 68:6.
Personal progress is accountability. Read D&C 28:13.

Some Suggestions:

PP book-look at it. The visual message is: You can't get to Christ except through the temple.
For your first PP visit, visit the YW's room. Note color and decor. Ask prepared questions to get to know her better-how about an "All About Me" sheet
P+P=PP P(lanning)+P(erformance)=Personal Progress.
The PP book is an opportunity to sit with the YW and say," What can we learn? How can we help you? What would you like to accomplish? Let me show you how this will help. " And that makes all the difference.
Leaders need to hold the medallion in esteem. Leaders-earn it, wear it, display it. Tell the YW about the stake PP plaque. Is there one in your building?
Have the YW write a poem about PP. Or you write one.
Try this for motivation: Make a PP box with a slit in the top. Put on table each Sunday and at activities, if desired. Each YW puts her name in when she has completed a goal, or for laurels, every hour they pass off. You can add other things to work on such as bringing scriptures to class, dressing in value color the first Sunday-whatever you want. Then, once a month, draw names out for a reward. (Choose whatever number of rewards your budget will stand.) With each reward try to put a scripture. Then empty box and start over. (From Resource room.)
One of the best ways to assess how well the PP program (indeed and anything else in the YW program) is to ask several YW who have just left the program. Have a group of them over for lunch and pick their brains-they are terrific!
Handout idea from resource room-Small pic of President Kimball with - "It is in the doing that the real blessing comes. DO IT! That's our motto".
Some wards here have had Pajama Parties at the president's home. Girls came in pj's bringing their PP books and brought their stuffed animals.
Some have had PP activities where all foods starting with P were served!

Mary Gold.gif (3585 bytes)To jump-start the PP program if it has been neglected or overlooked: Give each YW a plant (start from seed) or something that blooms and grows. Label: "PP will help you to grow as you make goals and keep commitments (covenants)

PP interviews. Do on a quarterly basis.

One week before set up the time and place for a visit. Ask her to take out her PP book and review her goals that week and talk to her parents about them, (You could send a note to her parents too.) so she is prepared.
Several days before, send her a note in the mail-a friendly reminder!
1-2 hours before, call on the phone.
Go with prayer. Where? A quiet personal spot-the park in summer, her room, or yours in winter.
You might consider sending a letter home to the parents. Ask them to read their daughters PP book and sign it and return the signed letter to you when they have completed their reading.
Make a list of basic questions (I think I still have the one I used) to ask at each PP interview. You may want to change them slightly depending on the YW.
On the back of each YW PP chart, write down things you overhear_fav color, fav things, interests, skills. Then when you want to give her a gift or acknowledge her in some way, you'll have ideas.
Have the YW list her strengths and weaknesses. Look through the PP book and connect her goals to them.

Some Handouts and Reminders:

Small doughnut-"doughnut" forget your PP goals.
Plastic hanger-"Hang" in their with your PP goals.
Bowl with Hershey's kisses and bubble gum. Tell the YW to give themselves a "kiss" if they worked on PP that week, or bubblegum to "chew" themselves out if they didn't.
Hand out apples- the time is "ripe" to do PP.
Helium balloons-Let your spirit soar with PP. (They love this one!
Jelly beans. Be a happy human Bean with PP. We bought the Jalapeno gourmet jelly beans and said-PP is hot stuff!
Orange slice candy-"Orange" you having fun with PP?
Sucker -Feeling "licked about PP? Meet with the PP specialist.

Erasers (pencil toppers)-Finding time for PP. Ah! There's the rub! Talk to your advisor.
Sponges (cheap) cut into silhouette of flame-"Squeeze" in time for PP this week?Potpourri-PP is Heaven "scent"-Have you opened your PP book this week?
Crayons-"Color" your world with PP.
From President Kimball, "I believe in goals, but I believe that the individual must set (her) own. Goals should always be made to a point that will make us reach and strain. Success should not necessarily be gauged by always reaching the goal set, but by progress and attainment."

(Our YW got tires of cute cards. They liked stuff like this. They wanted to see what they got next.)
