Keeping Personal Progress "Personal"

Contributed by: Kim placebo1@swbell.net

I've tried to think of a way to get the girls going on PP as a group, yet still keep it "personal". Once a month, we will try to at least start on one of the required value experiences in each value. Here's what I've dreamed up so far:

Faith: #3. I made FHE packets on the topic of obedience. (The story of Noah's Ark). I showed them a finished packet & ran through how the FHE would be conducted. Then the girls colored, cut out & laminated the visual aids. They were instructed to go home & do the FHE, ask participants to share an experience that strengthened their faith & write in their journal about it. Then we would pass them off on it. We did this last week & they seemed to enjoy it.

Divine Nature: #1 or #2. We will color-code the Proclamation in their PP books according to the value line by line.  If we apply this to #2, I thought I'd read or give them a copy of "Just a Mother" (also swiped from this list). I would make copies of conference issues on womanhood for them to take home & read. They would have to work on an attribute for 2 weeks & write in their journal, but this could give them the starting point. Seems like you sort of have to spoon feed them, or kick them in the butt to get going sometimes.

Individual Worth: I haven't figured this one out completely yet. I'm thinking about doing #2, and creating some sort of hopes & dreams survey worksheet for them to complete during the meeting. (with the categories of future home, family, education & accomplishments). Then they can devise a
plan. I thought it might be fun to make the survey into a "time-capsule" that they can open & compare with the plan they made at some future date.

Knowledge: #2. Our knowledge month will be in April, so I thought it would be fun and interesting to learn some gardening skills. I have a friend with a fabulous garden that would probably enjoy teaching the girls some fundamentals. Not sure about it yet, though.

Choice & Accountability: #3. . Maybe do the Carnival of Life activity, Hold to the Rod activity, etc.

Good Works: #2. I have a cookbook called, "Once a Month Cooking". It teaches you how to cook 2 weeks or a month's worth of meals in one day. You freeze everything, and just warm up something when it's dinnertime. (I've never had the ambition to actually try this!) But, I thought I'd make & give the girls a booklet based on this book, covering the planning, preparation, shopping lists & recipes for a 2 week cycle and maybe do a little demonstration on how you'd tackle a job like that during our meeting. I'd encourage them to shop & cook with their mothers since it's a huge job & the requirement says to "help" plan & prepare the meals. Also, the new PP program is to include the family.

Integrity: #2. Thinking about doing a "trash-it" night. The girls could bring anything objectionable (item of clothing, video, music, etc) that they'd
like to get rid of in their lives. It could just be a slip of paper written with the behavior they wish to change. Then we could symbolically throw them
away, or have a bon-fire.
