Personal Progress is the Heart of the Program

bullet "The Young Women in Excellence program is an incredible tool.  At the beginning of the year, each young woman should choose a value and immerse herself in it.  The question should not be, "what do I want to do?" but "what do I want to become?"  Then if she chooses faith, she'll study faith, she'll pray about faith, she will collect stories and articles about faith, maybe she'll write poetry about faith, she may go interview the Stake President about faith, she'll get a computer printout of every scripture that has the word faith in it, and by the end of the year, she will have become a young woman of faith.  Then she will complete a project, to express her understanding of the value she has chosen.  The focus won't be the project.  The focus is the value.  The project is only a symbol of what she has become.  The purpose of the project is to serve as a visual reminder of the strength she has gained."  Sister Lynn Allred  (posted with permssion)

bullet Personal Progress is the heart of the Young Women program.

bullet Personal Progress is a resource to help families bring young women unto Christ.

bullet Personal Progress is a great tool for parents to learn more about their daughters and to share in some of their personal progress experiences.

bullet Introduce the theme for the year at  NB and let them know they need to decide and start working on a "value experience" now.  Parents will be in attendance and you can give them a little pep talk about "knowing" which value their daughter has chosen to "become" , and encourage them to spend personal time with their daughter reviewing her goals and progress made at least once a month.

bullet As leaders, we should know what "value" they have chosen. Ask them about it at least once a month,  "What have you been doing to focus on "faith" this month?"  Take 5 minutes at the end of  class (one a month) to let them write you a short note telling you how they are doing. You can then follow up with a note of encouragement, or an idea to help.

bullet Give them the opportunity during Sunday Opening Exercises to share something they have done during the week that has helped them focus on their "value".  Pre-assign the week before so they have time to think about this and are not put on the spot.

bullet Set up a display from the leaders. A couple of years ago, in preparation for YWIE, as a Stake YW presidency, we asked all the ward leaders, including ourselves, to choose a value and present them at a pre-YWIE as an example of what could be done! This was the beginning of one of my counselors receiving her Young Womanhood Recognition award. After she'd gone to that much work she decided to keep going and earn her medallion!!!!
