(12/14/05) We just had a great YW in Excellence program that I would like to share. The theme was "Every Star is Different". It was an academy award night. To prepare for the program we practiced the primary song "Every Star is Different" in the primary music book. We had a Young Woman play the descant on violin. One of our activities before the night was making "Walk of Fame" stars for each young woman. They were poster board size. We used gold wrapping paper for the outline of the star, burgundy wrapping paper for the star, and punched out letters in gold for their names. We also used a gold embossed temple at the bottom of the star. For the "red carpet" we used a roll of burgundy plastic tablecloth from the foyer of the church into the relief society room. We placed the "Walk of Fame" stars on either side of the "red carpet". A couple of weeks before the program, we videotaped each girl as they presented their young women value projects they had worked on. We have 22 girls and we were able to film each girl -- even if they didn't come often, they were willing to be filmed. We had a guy in our ward edit the film and put each girl in the value category she had done the project in -- Faith, Divine Nature, etc. The music we used in the film was the "Theme from Forrest Gump" which worked perfectly. So the girls came in with their parents and sat down. We showed the film which ended up being about 1 minute per girl. The girls had so much personality on the film...it was really fun. Those that did a dance were able to actually show it on video. Then we sang our song...all of the girls and leaders sang. Then we gave out awards...gold spray painted "Mrs. Butterworths" syrup bottles (with the syrup still in so they were heavy". We called them "Emmas". We had envelopes with the "Winners" in each category and had the girls come up and accept their "Emma" with a speech. After we had the bishop give a small speech, and had star sugar cookies for dessert. The whole night lasted only 1 hour. After the program we had the "Papparazzi" take pictures of the girls with their star, parents, and "Emma". We did it on a Sunday afternoon so more parents and girls could come. It was really fun and a huge success. Background by: Paint Pots |
