Scripture: Matt 6:19-21
Introduction of new Beehives
Spotlight on graduating Laurels
Theme presentation: YW board
Special Musical Number: Sung to tune of Pirate's Life for Me
Yo ho, yo ho, a righteous life for me
We pray and read scriptures
Our journal we write
Stand up, ye daughters, yo ho
Our personal progress (This could be changed to say "Our YW Camp")
Is reaching new heights
Stand up, ye daughters, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho, a righteous life for me
We treasure our values
The help us grow strong
Stand up, ye daughters, yo ho
When we follow the Savior
We cannot go wrong,
Stand up, ye daughters, yo ho
Yo ho, yo ho a righteous life for me.
If you are going pirate, what about using metal and wood trays for the
food? You can use small meringue cookies (Divinity?) to look like
pearls, and a box with gold chocolate coins and rock candy in it as a
centerpiece. For refreshments, what about homemade root beer, breads and
cheese, fruit (pineapple, grapes, bananas, tangerines) and sugar cookies
decorated like sand dollars? AAAARRRRGH! It shivers me timbers thinking
about it!

Anyone who was interested in using a treasure theme for New Beginnings.
Here are some of the ideas we are using. We will apply the "search" part
of D&C 90:24 to searching for treasure. We are making invitations and
programs to look like a pirate's treasure map. (Making them out of paper
sacks with the edges burned all around). We are inviting everyone to
treasure island, decorating in luau decor, (I ordered plastic leis, and
Hawaiian decor from the Oriental Trading Co.) and we are rewriting the "Value
Hostages" program on the YW Connection to fit our needs. We will use
the idea from that program but changing it to "You are marooned on an
island and taken hostage by the native people there. Their request for
ransom is a candy bar with nuts, a lock of your hair, and one of your
"valued treasures". What treasure would you be willing to give up?
We are then having seven girls talk about each of the "valued treasures"
(YW values). Their parts will be similar to what is on the "Value
Hostage" program. We are giving each girl a small treasure chest with
seven "jewels" in the value colors inside. We will make some kind of
handout to go with the treasure chest but haven't figured that out yet.
We will also talk about the real treasure being the testimony of Jesus
Christ they will gain by doing personal progress and by applying the YW
values in their lives.
We are serving fruit and fruit dip and orange Julius for refreshments. I
even got tiny umbrellas to go in the drinks. We also thought if would be
fun for everyone to dress in capris, flip flops, and Hawaiian type
shirts. We are excited to do this program. It will be fun but spiritual
too. Hope these ideas help someone.

This may not work for what you are
thinking, but I did have a good experience with buried treasure. We
invited the young women to each write their testimony with a stylus on
thin copper (ahem, it looked like gold, okay ;-) metal sheets, assembled
it all into a book with large rings, put it in a sealed container and
buried it. We dug it up at a specified time two years later (the girls
would each have progressed to the next class at least). As we lifted
this "holy" book out of the ground, we felt as if we had truly
discovered a treasure - a modern testimony of Jesus Christ written by
his disciples. There was a reverence among all the girls as they
recorded their most sacred feelings. Before we wrote, we read and
discussed the story of Moroni being alone as he buried his testimony on
gold plates, praying that his words, and the words of other followers of
Christ, would work for good upon the earth sometime in the future.

When I was
in YW we had a lesson about your value and becoming the best you can be
I think, and the handout was a treasure chest that had the following
smaller handouts in it. I still have it!
"Faith is the candle that shines through all darkness." (Candle)
"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies."
(Ruby - red, shiny craft thing)
"Prayer is the key of the day and the lock of the night." (Key)
"Kindness is the golden charm that binds us together" (Golden charm)
"Dedication changes the grit into a pearl" (Pearls - part of a chain,
dolls pearls or other)
"Spare moments filled with service are the gold dust of time." (Gold
glitter painted on)
"Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it." (Mirror, or
reflective sticker)
"Love makes one richer than a mountain of gold." (Heart)
"A smile increases your face value." (Smiley sticker)
Since many of our YW are into the whole
"Pirates of the Caribbean" thing, we chose this theme and had a lot of
fun with it. We decorated with a banner that said "Daughters of the
Caring Being"....we had a couple of palm trees made from cardboard
carpet rolls. On the tables we had treasure maps (made with the help of
some of our primary children) with a treasure chest (made of brown paper
covered shoe boxes) filled with value colored bead necklaces, chocolate
coins, and Hershey's Nuggets candies. Each of the board members dressed
up like a pirate and wore a bandana in a value color. We each also took
a value, found a scripture or quote relating to it (we tried to find
scriptures that had to do with treasure...but not everyone was able to
do that) and made a short presentation about that value, using a prop
with a nautical theme. For favors we found little treasure chests at
Michael's and put the 7 value quotes along with a "jewel" glued on in
that value color into the
chest.
We also sent the YW on the Value
Treasure Hunt. (we used stickers instead of
gumballs...and we gave them clues to different
places in the church to find the next value and clue....they put their
stickers on a paper that had a picture of an old scroll with "treasure
you values" at the top) and while they were doing that I spoke to the
parents about personal progress.
Scriptures &
Thoughts for Theme
"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust
doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: "But lay up for
yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth
corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
"For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matt
6:19-21
Let us not be satisfied to live our lives without knowing Christ. The
comfort of his Spirit enables us to walk a different path, in the
direction we wanted to go before we came to this earth, a way that
brings us more light, knowledge, ability, and joy each day. Finding this
path and following its course is the only real treasure in life.
