Price is Right

Any of the YW who were interested were asked to make up commercials based on one of the values. The YW then put on their commercials at various points in the evening.

(be warned that there are many places in the script where I don't actually write the full part but just a summary of what the person will be saying)

The Price is Right

When coming through the door, everyone received a big nametag with their family name on it. Underneath the family name was written (in smaller letters) "mother", "father", or "YW's name". We wanted to really emphasize that they were working as a family tonight and in Personal Progress in the future.

Opening Song: Love at Home

Sister Assistant:
I would like to welcome you to our special Personal Progress taping of "The Price is Right" and thank you for joining us in an opening song and prayer.  Since we are on the road with "The Price is Right" we are a little short staffed. Bro. Barker has only brought a few assistants [all YW leaders who did not have a YW age daughter] with him for this episode but we should get along just fine! All of you should have found a calendar of our 2002 activities on your chair when you came in. We have some exciting things planned that you won't want to miss so be sure to hang onto it. If you have any questions, please feel free to come talk to us after the show. Before we get started let me define a couple of terms you will be hearing this evening:

A value experience is a goal your daughter can set having to do with scripture reading, journal keeping, etc. Each young women value in the Personal Progress program has 3 value experiences attached to it. Your daughter will also be able to choose 3 more experiences to complete for each value, making a total of 6 value experiences required for each value.

Value projects are larger goals that will take at least ten hours to complete. In the Personal Progress program, your daughter will create her own value projects, one for each value. All of the experiences in a value should be done before she begins on that value's project.

I know this may be a lot of information to process quickly so we invite at least one parent from each family to join your daughter at our Personal Progress workshop this coming Wednesday evening at 7pm. During that time, we will answer questions and clarify the changes in the Personal Progress program. We will also be able to sit down with you and your daughter and help her make the transition to the new Personal Progress program and book.

Now, Brother Barker will be out here in a moment but, before he comes, let's talk about the rules. You will be playing as a family team and different members of your team will participate in different activities here this evening. You should all have a rulebook [handbook for parents and leaders of youth] under your seat and we ask that the parents of each team read it thoroughly at your own leisure after our show this evening. For now, let me point out one or two important points:

p. 3 _ as parents, you have the primary responsibility to help your daughters succeed, tonight as well as in life. Further information in the book you are holding as well as myself and other YW assistants will help in any way we can. Please communicate with us often to help us strengthen and meet the needs of your family.

p. 4 _ as your daughters complete our final activity here tonight, they will need your signatures before they can truly be done. When you leave this evening, your daughter will take her very own "Personal Progress" book with her, full of great opportunities to help her develop and grow. There will be a price to pay for each one (be it time, other activities, etc.) but I think you will find that the price is right. After the young women complete each experience, she will need a signature before it is officially done. Parents, we encourage you to make sure that signature be yours! Stay involved with your daughter and find out what value experiences she is working on. Help her choose worthy and strengthening value experiences and projects. Build family home evenings and family activities around helping the young women complete their experiences and projects. You will have to give up some time, even activities of your own, but, again, I think you will find that the price is right!

At the end of the evening, the entire audience will also receive a supplemental rulebook entitled "For the Strength of Youth". We encourage you to read it cover to cover as a family and commit to live the standards found within.

By the end of the evening, I think you will agree that the price is so right! And now, let's welcome Brother Barker and play The Price is Right!

Bro. Barker [our only bishopric member with a YW age daughter]:  Welcome to the Price is Right! To get started this evening, we will have our first showcase. All of our family teams will participate in this event.

This is the way our first showcase is going to work:

Each Personal Progress value has a statement associated with it which explains what that value really means. You will be given a sheet of paper on which you will find all of the young women values and statements. However, one of them is incorrect. Working as a family team, please find the incorrect statement and correct it. Any families who complete this showcase correctly will move on to our first game.

<YW leaders hand out papers and writing utensils>

You will all check your own answers. Sister Assistant, what are the correct answers?

<I run through the correct answers with them and hopefully someone will win. If more than one family completes the exercise correctly, they will all move on to the first game and function as one team>

Our winners today will participate in "What is that phrase?" Each member of the winning family team will take a turn guessing a letter. When you think you know the phrase, you may ring the bell and submit your guess. You have one minute to guess the phrase and are only allowed one "official" guess. If you submit five incorrect letters, time ends before you have submitted a guess, or your guess is wrong, our second place team will have an opportunity to take your place and the clock will restart. Our category this evening is "Theme."

[Stand Ye In Holy Places is tacked to rolling bulletin board w/one letter per page and flipped so front w/letter is against board. Each letter is flipped as a correct guess is made -- just like a low-tech Wheel of Fortune]

Congratulations!! Sister Assistant, tell the _______ Family what they have won!

[hold up picture and describe how standing in holy places has made it possible for them to have a forever family and benefits of this prize]

For our next showcase, we will need to group our families into teams. My assistants will divide you into seven teams. As you are assigned to a team, please be seated at the appropriate table [tables are number 1-7]. You will need to bring your chair, with parents sitting behind daughters.

<wait until everyone is seated>

Each Personal Progress value has a scripture that is associated with it. When I say go, you will open the envelopes on the table before you. Inside of them you will find a scrambled scripture associated with one of the values. Your task is to quickly unscramble the words to make a scripture which you will tape onto the posterboard at your table. A member of your team will then come up to this board [rolling bulletin board up front with each of the seven values written on individual pieces of paper and tacked to the board] and take the value you think that scripture belongs with and attach it to your posterboard as well. When you have done that, return to the board to take a number [numbers 1-7 each written on 3x5 card and tacked to bulletin board], the first group done grabbing number one, the second group done taking number two, etc. If you need help unscrambling your scripture, one of the assistants will be happy to help you. Are there any questions? Ready, and go!

[assistants can only look up scripture reference and give hints but may not let team see scripture]

<play Scripture Scramble>

It looks like we have a winner! Sister Assistant, will you please review the scriptures and their associated values.

<I will go through each table and make sure they have matched the appropriate value and scripture and collect poster board when done>

Our winning family team will now participate in our Color Match game. In addition to a scripture and phrase, each Personal Progress value has a color associated with it. In this game, one parent on the team will try to match each color with its correct value. Other team members may help by giving input from the sidelines. When you think you are done, please ring this bell and Sister Assistant will tell you how many you have done correctly and how many are incorrectly matched. You will have one minute to make all the corrections. If you are not done at the end of your time, another adult on your team will take your place and the time will restart. Ready, and go!

<play Color Match>

Congratulations! Miss Assistant, please tell the families what they have won!

[hold up picture and explain how living the PP program can help us all have greater spiritual strength to meet trials and entitle us to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost at all times]

For our next showcase, we will be playing scripture plunko [3'x3' sheet of tile with nails sticking out of it such that a coaster dropped from the top will knock against the nails and travel to the bottom. There are scripture references at the bottom of each path the coaster could take] All members of each team may participate and you will need your scriptures. We will play this game twice in order to find our participants for the next two games. At the bottom of our plunko board, you see several scriptures. In the Personal Progress program, each of these scripture is studied as part of a value experience. My assistant will drop this disc into our plunko board which will travel to the bottom, landing on one of the scriptures at the bottom. The first family team to find the scripture reference in their scriptures will come to the board next to me and take a number, the first team done taking
number one, the second team taking number two, etc. The winning team must first correctly identify which value this scripture is associated with before they can go on to play our next game. Is everyone ready? All right, let's play Scripture Plunko!

<play Scripture Plunko twice with winner of first game sitting aside to wait for "golf game">

It looks like we have a winner who will now be following the value path! [rolling bulletin board or on floor -- 16-25 squares with one value written on each page such as honesty, gratitude, chastity, etc. in addition to the seven young women values] Up here you see sixteen values. Among them are the seven young women values upon which the Personal Progress program is based. I need one parent from the winning team to come up front and choose the seven connecting squares they believe are the young women values. You will have one minute to correctly identify the seven squares. When you think you have them all, ring the bell and my assistant will tell you how many are correct. If you have not found them all when your time is up, another parent on your team will take your place and the time will reset. Team members may NOT help from the sidelines for this game. Are you ready? Let's play! (If both parents are not able to find all 7 values, YW will be able to play in last round)

<play Value Path>

Congratulations to the ________ family! Sister Assistant, please tell them what they have won!

[hold up picture -- living the values taught in the Personal Progress program can also help you feel increased love and harmony at home. Your home can become a true haven as you will often feel the Spirit there]

Now let's take our other winning family and play golf! [7 stripes of masking tape on the floor, gradually moving closer and closer to the "hole" for the
golf ball. YW starts at the first masking tape line]The object of this game is to putt the golf ball into the hole. For every question you get right, you will be able to move forward one space. When we are done with all of the questions, you must putt. I will need the young woman to putt but the entire family can work together to answer the questions. Let's play golf!

<play Golf>
?what line was added to the YW theme at the beginning of 2002? (strengthen home and family) _ all YW stand and repeat theme
?what is the young women motto? (stand for truth and righteousness)
?what is the minimum # of hours needed to complete a value project? (10)
?how many value experiences are completed for every value? (6)
?what should be completed before you can begin a value project? (6 value experiences)
?of the 6 value experiences, how many are chosen for you and how many can you choose yourself? (3 and 3)

Congratulations to (young woman)! Sister Assistant, please tell her what she has won!   (Substitute "could have won" if she is not able to get the golf ball into the hole)

<hold up picture -- temple marriage to a worthy priesthood holder -- describe the blessings associated with this, children born in covenant, power and authority of priesthood in your home, opportunity to spend eternity with your spouse>

Before we enter the showcase showdown, we have some gifts for the entire studio audience. Sister Assistant, would you please tell the audience what
they have won.

<PP packets -- PP books, journals, and FTSOF books -- with charm bracelets. Let them know that leaders will receive a bracelet too and will also earn charms as they work toward earning their Young Womanhood Recognition>

We would also like to recognize some special guests we have with us this evening. Sister Assistant, who do we have here tonight?

<I will honor old and new class presidencies and tell about charm they receive for serving as member of class presidency -- invite old class presidents to come up and introduce presidency members and invite new class presidencies to stand at seat w/presidents introducing presidency members>

We have now reached our showcase showdown. All young women will be participating in this event. You will each need a paper and pencil on the table in front of you. Sister Assistant, please tell us what is in the showcase!

Assistant:
We have a very special showcase here this evening.  <pull out items representing each thing as I describe all of earlier prizes plus personal testimony of Savior, celestial glory, example to others, constant companionship of the Holy Ghost, whatever else you feel to offer them>

Young women, I ask you to think very carefully about the items in this showcase and then write on your paper what you would be willing to pay to achieve these items. Throughout the evening, some of you have won prizes of a forever family, and increased love at home. But is it really this easy or is there more to it? Think now about what you might need to sacrifice in your life or what gospel principle you need to practice more faithfully in order to achieve these things. These are the things your Heavenly Father has promised you if you live faithfully. You have a divine birthright and are worthy of great blessings and eternal glory. The realization of this birthright is worth whatever you have to give up in order to achieve it. Heavenly Father has given you everything you need to succeed. You are surrounded by a family who loves you, young women leaders who will guide you, good friends who will support you, and the Holy Ghost who will never steer you wrong. Christ has already paid the ultimate price so that you could have the opportunity to live forever in the presence of your Heavenly Father. So, think very carefully about what you would pay to achieve these things and write your thoughts and feelings on the piece of paper in front of you. When you are done, share them with your parents. Parents, I ask you to sign that paper just as you will sign their Personal Progress value experiences and projects. Then, I would like the parents to write what they would be willing to pay to help their daughters achieve everything offered in this showcase and share what you have written with your daughter.

Young women, hold on to your page. Post it where you can see it as it will help remind you what is most important. There are other leaders who can share their testimonies with you. <give all YW "Testimony of Living Christ" and testimonies of YW leaders along with picture of Christ>

<turn time over to Bishop for closing remarks>
