[The following is a narration to
be read by a reader while the actions are portrayed by others. The
D.O.R.V.S. are simple sock puppets performed behind an overturned table
or cloth hung to conceal the puppeteers. Simple scenery is optional.]
Once upon a time long, long ago
on a day like (pause)...Today, there lived a beautiful young maiden
known as Know Right. She was a lovely young thing that all her life had
desired only to do what was right. She always wore her CTR ring on her
right hand...SEE! (Know Right holds up her finger to show an oversized
face of a CTR ring taped to her finger.) She had worn her ring a very
long time. It was a gift from her grandmother and it was precious to
her.
But one day as she was walking
through the woods to her grandmother's house, she lost her beloved
ring. She did not discover it was gone until she reached Grandma's. Know
Right was tearful as she asked her grandmother what she was to
do. Grandmother suggested that perhaps the Big Bad Wolf had stolen it,
but Know Right reminded her grandmother that the BBW was part of another
tale. Grandmother stood corrected and suggested that they both go back
and search along the path through the woods for the ring. The problem
was that Know Right had wandered from the path several times to pick
wild flowers on her way and had no idea where she could have lost the
ring. They searched and searched until it was nearly dark and they were
very tired. They sat down on a large rock to contemplate their plight
when suddenly a very small white creature approached them. (First sock
puppet appears/) Know Right and Grandmother were only slightly alarmed
when the creature spoke to them asking what was wrong. Know Right asked,
"Who are you?"
"My name is Faith and I am one of
the seven DORVS"
"Seven DORVS?" Know Right
questioned.
"Well, yes", said the little
creature, "it's an acronym for Defender Of Righteous Values. My value is
my name, Faith."
"How very interesting ", said
Grandmother.
"How may I help you?" asked
Faith.
Know Right and Grandmother
explained their situation and all about the lost ring.
"Oh yes, I know where your ring
is. (Know Right sighed with relief.) One of our DORVS", Faith continued.
"found it and since it looked valuable, locked it up in our treasure
chest of most valuable things. The chest is in a gully down near the
creek in a secret place. The problem is", the DORV went on, "is that you
must have seven keys to unlock the seven locks of the chest. Each of the
seven DORVS has but one key. I will be happy to lend you mine but you
must collect the others from the other DORVS. If you are patient, each
of them will pass this way on their way home from daily defending
righteous values. You may ask them to lend you their precious keys. I
think all will be willing to help once you explain your problem. Here,
take my key. You must guard it and keep it close to your heart so it
will not be lost."
Know Right took the key which
hung from a lovely white ribbon from around the DORV'S neck and placed
it around her own. She read the words on the key: "Faith, I am a
daughter of a Heavenly Father who loves me, and I will have faith in his
eternal plan, which centers in Jesus Christ, my Savior." She placed the
key over her heart. As she did this, she felt a great warmth fill her
heart.
Know Right and Grandmother waited
patiently. Soon the second DORV appeared. They once again explained
their problem and DORV number two whose name was Divine Nature
abligingly allowed Know Right to take the key with the same warning to
guard it very carefully. This key hung from a bright blue ribbon that
Know Right eased over her head. These were the words on the second
key: "Divine Nature, I have inherited divine qualities which I will
strive to develop." Placing the key over her heart, Know Right got the
same wonderful warm feeling in her heart as before.
The experience was identical as
each little DORV appeared in succession. Each kindly surrenduring the
valued keys to Know Right so that she could retrieve her cherished
ring. The third key was on a red ribbon taken from Individual Worth,
DORV three, which read: "I am of infinite worth with my own divine
mission which I will strive to fulfill."
The DORV named Knowledge gave her
a key on a attractive green ribbon. The words on that key read: "I will
continually seek opportunities for learning and growth."
Key number five came from Choice
and Accountability who was a bit reluctant to give over the
responsibility of the key to a stranger, but Know Right's promise to
take very good care of the key persuaded the hesitant little DORV. Know
Right placed the orange-ribboned key with the others after reading these
words; "Choice and Accountability, I will remain free by choosing good
over evil and will accept responsibility for my choices." The familiar
warmth once again filled her heart as she understood the little DORV'S
unwillingness to give up the key.
Good Works, DORV six, got a
promise from Know Right and Grandmother to do a good deed for a stranger
before giving up the sixth key which was attached to a sunny yellow
ribbon. For the sixth time Know Right was warmed by the words on the
key. This time she read: "Good Works, I will nurture others and build
the kingdom through righteous service."
The last key came after a long
wait. Grandmother and Know Right were beginning to worry that the
seventh little DORV had taken another path. They were nodding with sleep
when the last DORV made an appearance. "Integrity is my name," the DORV
explained, "I had to wait upon a friend whom I had promised to help
before I could start home."
The last key was relinquished,
this time dangling from a stunning purple ribbon. Know Right eagerly
looked for the words that would give her that warm heart feeling one
more time: "I will have the moral courage to make my actions consistent
with my knowledge of right and wrong."
"Yes!", Know Right
whispered. There they were, all seven valued keys hanging over the heart
of this pure young maiden. She would have moral courage and all of the
other great values the DORVS had entrusted to her would become part of
her determination to Choose the Right. She was ready now to search out
the treasure chest and recover her adored CTR ring.
Grandmother wrote down the
directions to the secret spot near the creek. She took out her trusty
flashlight that she had gotten from the woodsman--(but that's another
tale, too)--she took the flashlight from her bag and led the trek to the
treasure box. They carefully followed the directions as they walked,
they discussed the strange little DORVS and the meanings of the keys.
On a sudden there appeared before
them a snarling creature. Oh no, could it be? Was BBW a part of this
tale afterall? (pause) Yes. The wolf snarled and growled and growled and
snarled. ( That's what wolves do , ya know.)
Know Right's new-found courage
failed a bit as she held tightly to the keys over her heart. Grandmother
spoke quietly, encouraging Know Right to stay calm and to try and
remember the reason for their journey.
Know Right took a deep breath and
thought and thought. She was thinking of the words of the seven DORVS
and the engravings on the keys. In the meantime, Grandmother shined her
light all around looking for a way out of their predicament. Just then
Know Right saw that the poor wolf was caught in a trap. He was snarling
from pain.
"Oh, you poor creature!" Know
Right exclaimed. "I will help you get free."
Know Right slowly crept to the
creature and opend the horrible trap. The wolf looked at her as if he
was smiling and turned into the woods. He was gone as quickly as he had
appeared. That wonderful warm feeling filled her heart again--only it
seemed to wash over her whole being this time.
"Grandmother" Know Right
whispered, "the Good Works DORV must have known I would need to do a
good deed this night."
It seemed to Know Right that
losing the ring was really a great blessing for her because she had
found another treasure that she could always keep in her heart. Even
though the little DORVS were strange little beings, they had given her
very special keys, not just to a treasure chest but keys to a good life.
Sure enough, at last, just as the
DORVS had said, there was the treasure chest. Know Right placed each key
in it's corresponding lock. Faith, Divine Nature, Individual Worth,
Knowledge, Choice and Accountability, Good Works and Integrity. As she
turned each key, that same wonderful feeling rose up within her
heart. She had found her valued CTR ring and a whole treasure chest of
other valuables.
Suddenly, Know Right was jolted
by a loud ringing noise and a voice in the distance. The voice was
calling her name. Someone was shaking her. She sat up with a jerk.
"Wake up, Sleepyhead. Your alarm
has been going off for five minutes, Jo!", exclaimed her mom.
"It was a dream!", Jo muttered.
"What did you say?", Mom asked.
"Oh, nothing, Mom. I just had a
very sweet dream about Young Women Values. I think I understand better
now what Grandmother always told us girls."
"What's that, My Dear?"
"She said, 'Where your treasure
is, there will your heart be also...'"
"That's very true", mom said as
she picked up a book from the side of the bed and read, 'Snow White and
The Seven Dwarfs'. It amazes me how you never tire of these old books
your Grandmother Wright left you in her will."
"They help me feel close to her,
Mom. She is still very near and she is still teaching me." Jo looked
down at her CTR ring, smiled and with a warm heart started a new day.
The End.
Notes
We decorated the table for our
meal with a little white figurine of a young women and seven little
female type dolly cakes that I made to represent the DORVS that we place
around "Know Right" We also decorated with the seven golden keys on
which I wrote the seven values. We used napkins in the seven value
colors placed in napkin rings that I made from molds of the YW
Medallion. The molded pieces were done in a candy mold that I bought
from LDS Creations. Instead of chocolate I used plaster of paris. You
need to oil the mold first. I found the mold by punching up "candy
molds" on the internet. I'm sorry I don't have their number or e-mail
address. I mounted the "medallions" on pieces of Wrapping paper roll I
cut into about one inch sections. I sprayed the whole things gold. The
girls were thrilled. At each YW place at the table was a white little
figurine for each of them to take home. We found them for a dollar at a
discount store. We also found jewelry boxes that we decorated for each
of them. The boxes were white plastic. We decorated them with white
lace-ribbon, another medallion (this time left it white.), half pearls
set in gold glitter paint, and a "gem" representing each girl's choice
for her YW In Excellence program. Inside we place another CTR ring and
the YW logo necklace. There own treasure. Hope you will get some ideas
from this. Goodluck. Faye J.
