We did this sort of program for our New Beginnings last year. My
ultra-talented mother in law painted us a "set on canvas of Bethlehem. (Let me back
up, our theme this year was "In His Footsteps"). To start 2 women in our ward
sang "I walked today where Jesus walked", it was beautiful. I had asked seven
people in our ward to portray people who had been affected by the Savior. We started with
young Mary, then on to a High Priest in the temple when the Savior came as a boy, then to
the Apostle Paul, then Jarius, then the woman who was to be stoned, then to a Lamanite in
America and ended with older Mary at the foot of the cross. The thing that was really neat
about it was that each of them came up with their own words.
I was fully prepared to write a script, but when I asked
each of them and told them what we had in mind, they wanted to use their own words. It
really was incredible. Our former Stake President was the High Priest, we had a young
pregnant mom who was young Mary, she talked about her fears of being a mother to the
Redeemer of the world and how she loved this baby inside of her and prayed that her Father
in Heaven would protect him...I get teary thinking of it. Our Bishop was the
Lamanite, he has had 4 sons go to the Lamanites on missions. He too, was incredible.
But the one that brought everyone to tears was older Mary. She really, truly cried as she
thanked her Father for sending His son. For allowing her to be his mother and how proud
she was of him and asking Father to continue to protect Him. It was wonderful. Then we
ended with our YW singing "This is the Christ". It was a beautiful
evening.
