A Personal Progress Carol

Sisters -- Our class presidencies just finished planning New Beginnings and I am really excited about what they have created so I thought I would share it here in the hopes that it is a resource for someone else.

We will be inviting all of their parents to an evening's performance of "A Personal Progress Carol". This skit details the afternoon of a young woman named Carol (or Crabby Carol as she is known by some), a 15-yr-old Mia Maid who has lost interest in Personal Progress. Throughout the course of her lazy, sleep-all-day Saturday, she is visited by three ghosts who, of course, show her three important pieces of her life: the ghost of Personal Progress Present (shows Sister Reminds-a- lot, one of her YW leaders, talking on the phone to the YW Pres, Sister Trys-hard, about her sincere caring and concern for Carol), the ghost of PP Past (shows Carol as a new Beehive being welcomed by her new YW leaders, Sister Hugs-and-kisses and Sister Love), and the ghost of PP Future (shows Carol as a YW leader 20 in the future who feels she has missed out on great richness and opportunities in her life by only now beginning to gain a testimony of the PP program).

Through these experiences, Carol thinks about the meaning of the 7 PP values, finally digs out her old PP book (under her bed buried beneath an old gym sock, last week's snack, and 2 inches of dust) and ends on her knees asking her Heavenly Father to help her gain a testimony of the PP Program.

The class presidencies did a great job writing the script. They have come up with such an entertaining way to teach their parents the importance of the Personal Progress program as well as the meaning of the 7 values! Now on to the practice . . . :-) Rachael in Michigan

Just a little background info: This was written so that the narrator would have her script in front of her and not have to memorize her part. All of the other characters were told to understand their parts enough to be able to adlib but still get their cues from each other (I don't know if that makes sense but it worked when we ran through it last Wednesday). This way, anyone with a large part does not have to learn it by heart so the play can be presented without as much practice or pressure on the YW.

We are holding it in our gym with the bed set up in the middle and the other scenes (past, present, and future) taking place on the two sides (where the doors are). We started with two chalkboards shielding the left side from view so that the people in the present scene can be setting up and ready. When it is time for their scene, two YW dressed in a solid color pull the chalkboards to the right side (then to the other side for the past scene and back to the right for the future scene), in front of Carol's bedroom scene but behind Carol and her ghost as they "journey" to the present, past, and future. On the front of the chalkboards (facing the audience) are the seven values with their explanations enlarged and copied onto appropriately colored poster board.

The narrator was given leave to wander around as she is delivering her lines and even interact with the characters somewhat (our narr is a Laurel with quite a bit of acting experience and had a ball!). There is also a place where a character was asked to completely come up with her own speech based on the ideas presented in the script. Hopefully, you'll see. ANYWAY, on with the script . . .
