Good Works Lemon Candles

GOOD WORKS LEMON CANDLES

 You need:

1 dozen lemons (or half as many lemons as you have making the candles)
1 lb. of beeswax
1/2 t. lemon oil
Wicks

Take the lemons (yellow!) and cut them in half lengthwise. You then squeeze out as much of the juice as possible without tearing the skin.  Then hollow out the lemon halves with a spoon or gently pull with your hands.

In a double boiler, heat beeswax until melted, about 180 degrees. Turn off the heat, and add 1/2 t. lemon oil.

Dip the wick and holder with wax until coated. This will stiffen and straighten the wick. Press the wick holder into the bottom of the lemon half. We wrapped the wick around a penny as a weight and to remind them that good luck usually comes from Good Works.

Pour the wax into the lemon half and fill to the edge. Use a small paintbrush to coat around the edges.

We then set them to cool while we talked about ways we can do Good Works and the sunshine it brings not only into other's lives, but into our lives as well.

I had made some in advance that were already set and took them out to a baseball diamond next to the parking lot (yeah for this mild winter in Utah!!!) and put them at different corners around the field. One by one they lit their candle to show how much light comes when we let our lights shine. It was gorgeous to watch the lights coming together and then we walked back to the chapel and finished the evening.

The girls could take the candles home they made that night and let them set overnight. They could then give them away (we had sung "Scatter Sunshine" as our opening hymn that night) or burn them themselves.  They should be used within a few days or the lemon will start to go bad. When we told them this we had used the analogy that Good Works need to be shared and used quickly as not to lose the full flavor of good works and the sweet smells of service.

We're also going to do this as a Camp Project so that we can burn them on testimony night around the fire. It's great because you can then just throw the lemons in the fire when we're done and they look so beautiful as the girls walk holding them sort of like the candles in the pictures of the Ten Virgins. The image is beautiful!
