I did a
fireside at camp with six activities for each of the Be's. First I
showed them the an acronym (sp?) that I gleaned from this list, using
posters
for each 'Be' then turned them over to show the first letter - then
using other posters with each word of the acronym 'God sent Christ
to help people'. This way, they had visual aids to help them remember
the six be's - and according the 'Teaching, No Great Call' book, their
retention should have increased by 50%. I was pleased when throughout
camp (my fireside was the first evening) - whenever quizzed on the six
be's, they all remembered them. Anyway, then as a prelude to each of the
six activities, I had a short paragraph quote directly from President
Hinckley's address, to introduce the activities.
I had also made up verses to 'Annie Get Your Gun's 'Doin what comes
Naturally' - only I used the title,
"Bein' All That I can Be." At the
end of each group activity, the girls practiced the verse that pertained
to that activity, then we sang all the verses together when we were
together at the end. (I had posters with each verse on them.)
To split into groups, I used the 'Gratitude Be'. After reading the
pertinent quote, we talked about things we were thankful for. Then we
sang the
'gratitude' verse. I ended with being thankful for animals. I then
assigned them animal sounds according to their birthdays - Jan, Feb,
March were to
'Moo'. April, May June, were to 'oink'. July, Aug., Sept., were to
'Baa'. Oct., Nov. Dec., were to 'Cluck'. They were to make the noise of
their animals to find the others in their 'herd, flock, etc. This
separated them into four groups. The four groups rotated through the
four more be's, and were directed by other leaders.
Smart Activity: After hearing their appropriate quote, this group
deciphered hymns that were titled opposite; i.e. 'There is Ugliness All
Asquare' was
'There is Beauty All Around' or 'Oh Ugly for Crowded Ground' was 'Oh,
Beautiful for Spacious Skies.' Etc. I had several hymns and primary
songs
printed on poster paper, with the name on the back of it's opposite
counterpart so the leader easily knew the answers. Make sure you have
enough to keep them busy for about ten minutes. Then they should
practice their 'smart' verse.
Clean Activity: After reading the pertinent quote, - one where he talks
about the importance of choosing good friends, the activity was geared
around
something that would only work if you had friends; Divide them into two
teams, the dogs & the cats. Each team has a 'head dog' or 'head cat'.
Since
we did this activity outside, I chose navy beans to be what was thrown
on the ground, and the team members would find a navy bean, then bark or
meow while pointing to it until their head dog or cat came to pick it
up. Only the team head could pick up the beans and collect them in a
baggy. Each team tries to collect the most beans (or peanuts, etc.)
Practice the pertinent verse.
True Activity: After the pertinent quote they played this game: This
activity depends on people telling the truth. Each person starts out
with five or ten
pieces of candy. They take turns telling something that they have NEVER
done. Example: I have never seen the movie Titanic.' If any of the
others HAVE seen that movie, they give me a piece of their candy. The
trick is to think of something that you have never done, that others
have probably done. I heard one YW say, 'I have never climbed a tree.'
She got lots of candy on that one. Practice the pertinent verse.
Humble Activity: Read the appropriate quote. We related this activity by
saying that when we're humble, we are always trying to help and serve
others.
We did a hula hoop relay where two teams form two lines on either side
of two hula hoops being held vertical by two people. One person from one
side runs through the hula hoop to their team line on the other side,
grabs the first person's hand, then the two of them run through the hoop
back to their first line to grab the first person - and on and on until
all the teams line runs through the hoop together. They have to work
together to be successful - the first ones through the hoop have to be
careful not to run too fast before the last ones are through the hoop.
Practice the pertinent verse.
We rotated through each of these activities, then returned for the final
be:
Prayerful Activity: After sharing the appropriate quote, I divided them
up to sing 'A Child's Prayer' from the Primary Songbook. Each side took
a turn
singing each verse. It was beautiful - especially at camp under the
stars.
Then we lightened things up again by practicing the last verse of the
'Bein' all that you can be' song, then we put all the verses together
and sang a
couple of times for the summary.
It was great fun! Anyway, this is my suggestion - one I've been meaning
to share with the list since our camp last month, but you know how it
goes.
I'll post the words to the 'Bein' all that you can be' song in another
mailing since this one is so long.
