I am going to beautifully wrap a box to look like a
gift. Have one of the girls open the lid to find it empty. Ask her if she
likes the gift. "It is beautiful isn't it?" It is not the kind of
gift you would want to receive. Beautiful on the outside but empty on the inside? Is
it the kind of gift you would like to give? If the gift represented temple marriage
and you were to give it to the man you intend to become your eternal companion, would you
want to give it with nothing in it? Nothing to add?
We can then discuss the different aspects of an eternal marriage that you want to be able
to offer your future companion: Faithfulness, respect for the priesthood, a strong
testimony, money management, cooking skills, honesty and kindness, the ability to love and
nourish husband and children, the list goes on and on.
This is just a basic idea, I am still working on it. You wouldn't want to offer an
empty gift to your spouse...work on the important things now so you can give him the same
that you would expect back in return. After all, a temple marriage is only the
doorway to an eternal marriage. an eternal marriage is what you put into it and make
of it together. I may even put building blocks on the board as we discuss what goes
into an eternal marriage: A strong base--temple marriage, and then build upward with
the other aspects.
