by: Kathy marmy@mstar2.net I gave the dads (and a mom) a letter asking them to write their
daughter a letter focusing on developing their skills in the two areas of the lesson:
homemaking and spirituality. Their response was incredible (thanks to being able to e-mail
it to me -- then I printed the letter off on stationary). Some of their letters read like
scripture. They appreciated the opportunity to write their daughter.
Hymns were playing in the background as they entered the classroom and it was
arranged/decorated as homey as possible, without a lot of work put into it. I'd made a
live floral arrangement with pink roses, baby's breath and ferns for a centerpiece (which
was dismantled at the end of the lesson).
I started out with quotes from my daughter's college roommates about what they thought
would help the girls as they work toward becoming a Celestial Partner, sort of like the
first story in the lesson. Then I told a personal story similar to "The Singing
House".
[We played the Guessing Game with household items - See Especially for Beehives]. I then discussed
with them the importance of developing skills using each item on the tray. One thing I
think they really enjoyed was me teaching them about my planner notebook to help them with
time management and organizing their life. (They really liked that I had a section for
them.)
The girls read some quotes from the lesson and some other quotes by Sheri Dew and
President Hinckley on spirituality. They already know I love the scriptures - I like to
tie in a scripture story with their every day life each week, so I just went over a couple
of stories.
At the end of the lesson I put the music back on and showed them how to make their own
arrangement with a rose, baby breath, and fern leaf in a square of clear floral wrap,
which they took home with their letter from their dad/mom.
