The beehives did a guessing game where they read certain job
descriptions and they had to guess which jobs were being described. They
had some really obscure ones and I heard it was fun. For the Laurels and
Mia Maids, the MM advisor talked for about 10-15 minutes about what kind
of schooling is required for several different kinds of jobs, what kind
of salary you could expect for those jobs and how much the school costs.
Then my advisor and I did a short skit of a girl going to interview for
a job. The girl being interviewed did everything wrong that you can
think of. (I'll post the skit below) Then we had the girls tell us what
she did wrong, we did a short list of do's and don'ts for them when
applying for the jobs and doing interviews. Then I'd made up a bingo
type card with all the do's and don'ts written in the spaces. We handed
them out and played a couple of rounds of bingo and I had some dollar
store prizes for the winners. Everyone got candy to mark their board, so
no one was left out.
Skit
Employer: Hello Miss Walters, please sit down.
Potential Employee: Hey, sorry I am late, I just had some other stuff to
do.
E: Well, I am very busy today, so this will have to be short. You want
to be a cashier in my clothing store.
PE: Yes, I love clothes and love fashion. How much of a discount will I
get?
E: We can talk about that if you are hired. How many hours a week can
you work?
PE: Well, I am free on Mondays and Thursdays and most Wednesdays.
E: Can you work weekends?
PE: Ummm, I guess I could work Saturday during the day.
E: Are you employed anywhere else?
PE: No.
E: Is there a reason you can't work weekends?
PE: Well, there is usually a basketball game on Friday night and my
boyfriend is on the team, so I like to go to those. On Saturday night we
go out, so I can't work then either.
E: It says here that you are on the Tennis Team?
PE: Oh, did I put that down? Ummm, well I guess that technically I am on
the student council, but I've been so busy lately and they kinda kicked
me out.
E: Are you involved with any other teams or programs at school?
PE: Well, I am pretty busy, so no, not really.
E: Do you have any references?
PE: Yes, my friend wrote me one.
E: Has this friend seen you work?
PE: No, but she is my best friend and we are always together. (cell
phone rings) Hey, can you hang on a second?
E: Sure
PE: (Ad lib speaking on the phone)
E: Well, I think we are done here. We'll be making our decision soon and
we'll let you know if you get the job.
PE: Ok thanks! I really, really, really want this job.
***NOTE
Throughout the skit, the person playing potential employee should fidget
with her nails and hair, slouch and squirm in her chair and avoid eye
contact with the interviewer.
