Just some quick thoughts about
this lesson. |
I’m planning to bring a tray of the most unhealthy food
I can think of and tell the girls that I have prepared a wonderful feast for
them. I’ll unveil the tray of "junk food".
We’ll talk about how they would
feel if they sat and eat an entire meal of nothing but junk food.
We'll talk about how their
decisions affect them now, but what about later in life? When they are
expecting a baby? How important are their decisions now?
We'll also discuss how we feel
about ourselves when we do not take care of ourselves vs. doing our best to
be as healthy as possible. This is where I will incorporate
Elder Jeffrey R. Hollands words addressed
to our YW during the October 2005 Saturday afternoon session.
Discussion: From "For the
Strength of the Youth" - Physical Health: Keep the Word of Wisdom.
Eat nutritious food, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Do not
use hard drugs, alcohol, coffee, tea, or tobacco products. Do not
abuse prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Then I’ll bring out a tray of
grapes, cheese, veggies, and talk about the difference and how they will
feel physically after eating a meal of healthy snacks.
The
best snacks for when you have the munchies, are snacking with friends, or
just zoning out in front of the TV:
- Mini-pizzas on English muffins, topped
with low-fat cheese and veggies
- Bite-sized pieces of raw veggies with a
dip made from low-fat ranch dressing.
- Mini-cups of fruit chunks like peaches and
pineapples (more fun if you eat with a toothpick!)
- Mini-sandwiches made with pita bread,
bagels, rice cakes or whole wheat breads
- Frozen grapes or frozen bananas served
with light chocolate syrup
- Popcorn sprinkled with parmesan cheese
(instead of butter)
- Low-fat cheese and crackers
The best snacks for energy and concentration:
- Cold or hot cereal, especially whole
grain, topped with fruit and low-fat milk
- Sandwiches made with pita bread, bagels,
rice cakes, or whole-wheat bread
- A bagel, or piece of fruit like an apple
or banana, covered in peanut butter
- Dried fruit mixed with sunflower seeds
- Soft pretzels or mini-pretzels with
mustard for dipping
- Graham crackers with low-fat milk
- A fruit smoothie made with fruit, yogurt,
and milk
- Low-fat yogurt
Here are a few other cute sayings you might find useful:
Green is Lean
Hide from Fried
I Get a Crush Out of You! (Pineapple - a very healthy snack
with a variety of tasty treats :-)
- add crushed pineapple to
- sugar free gelatin,
- as a finishing touch to grilled or roasted chicken
- 1/2 cup of frozen vanilla yogurt
- a salad to keep it healthy while adding a bit of
zing!
- skimmed cottage cheese
