What Are You Willing to Give

Here is an idea for this lesson - any suggestions to improve or add?

This might even be more effective if you had your bishop come in and make this announcement during opening exercises °Ü°

Y2K has created some problems in our area...(something they may be able to relate to because of all the talk) There are many in our ward who have no food storage, and because of the problems created by Y2K the bishops storehouse has been depleted. So.....we are asking each family to bring their food storage-in fact, all storage items, (shampoo, personal hygiene items, T.P., Paper Towels, Dishwasher detergent, etc.), that they have to the stake center tomorrow evening. We will then divide the items among the members according to need.

1. How would you feel?

2. Would you bring everything (including your favorite cereal that your mother specifically purchased for you because she knows how much you love it. And your favorite shampoo!!!! Your hair just doesn't do what it is suppose to do unless you use "that" shampoo.)

3. Would you feel it was right, after all...prophets have been telling us for years to prepare for many different reasons. Your family has had to sacrifice a lot of "extras" so that you could follow the prophet and be prepared....the prom dress you really wanted was more than you and your mom had budgeted, and she said she'd go ahead and purchase it by using some of the "food storage" money this month....But you decided the dress wasn't that important and found another one that was within the budget even though you "really" wanted the other dress. In fact, you know that a young woman in another ward is one of the families that doesn't have food, and she purchased the dress you wanted. And the basketball shorts you wanted, you gave those up too so that your family could stay on budget in purchasing the food storage. Now your family is being asked to sacrifice again.

Let them discuss this for a few minutes and then teach the lesson on the Consecration and Sacrifice and that we may never be asked to do this, (This might be a good time to let them know the Bishop wasn't serious....at this time....but in the future there may come a time when we will be asked to share what we have) BUT there are other things that we are asked to do now : Read the quote from the manual by Elder Bruce R. McConkie (pg. l00) and continue with the lesson.
