Making Relationships Meaningful

Just thought I'd share a fun object lesson that my advisor used today with lesson 11. She decorated her table with small jars of jelly beans. Each jar only had one color in it. (all red all yellow) At the end of the lesson she picked up one jar and said "this jar represents my Aunt June. When I was young we would go and visit her, but I don't have time now so I took her out of my life."

She then handed the jar to one of the girls. Then the next jar, This is my cousin Kelly. She lives in another city with her family and we don't talk any more. She is not in my life anymore." then she handed the jar to another girl.

She did this with all the jars except the white jelly beans. She said how her relationship with her family could be bright and full of color but since she didn't put in the time-it was plain and pretty boring. She then put a large bowl on the floor and we had to tell how we can improve our relationship with our extended family and dump out our jelly beans into the large bowl. We mixed the jelly beans up and she said how we can all make our relations better. Then we refilled our jars and she had a cute saying about jelly beans and families on it.
