"Agency Is Free
but Bad Choices Can
Be Costly"
Here is what I think I am going to do for
lesson 4:To start the lesson - I am going to tell the parable of two
dogs:
2 Dogs
A
farmer had 2 dogs that he received as puppies. Both were pretty wild and
always ran away if they got out of the yard. Both dogs went through
training so that they would be of use to the farmer and not a nuisance.
After a few years one dog was able to be out of the yard at any time. He
helped out on the farm and received rewards and praise from the farmer
because he had taken to the training so well and didn't continue to run
away. The second dog didn't do so well with the training and wouldn't
learn to obey the farmer. He would still run away and get into trouble
if he got out of the yard. So after those same few years, the second dog
had his existence on the end of a long chain, inside a fenced yard. He
couldn't be trusted to be let free or to help on the farm. So which dog
feels the most freedom and is the most useful?

I can think of the same thing with your *driving license* as with what
you wrote about dogs and obedience. Can you guess what I would say? If
you don't obey the rules of the road, you'll eventually lose your
license. The person who obeys the rules will continue to drive. Who has
the freedom?
I am going to bring a chain and put it around one of
the girls and a ball to give to another girl. I am going to follow the lesson pretty much
as outlined - I think rather than copying the worksheet at the end of the lesson and
having the girls do them individually, I will just turn it into a discussion (my girls
don't get much out of the worksheet sort of things).
For a handout I am going to roll up a dollar bill (you know one of the toy ones that you
can find in the junk section by the toys) And attach a note that reads: "Agency is
free, but bad choices can be costly. Don't pay for your free agency." I got this off
of the list some time back. Thanks to whoever posted it as well.
