Contributed by: susan@truestar.comOur YW Pres. taught this lesson on Sunday and had a great
idea. She called all the girls and had them prepare to participate in the lesson. Some
brought their instruments (flute and saxophone), some came prepared to sing, etc. Those
who didn't have musical talents did other things. One girl read some poetry she had
written, etc. (If you have some talented artists, they could display some of their work.)
Then, during the lesson, she had them share their talents with the class. The girls were a
large part of the lesson..
I thought it was a great idea to let the girls participate.

I taught this lesson on this past Fast
Sunday to our whole YW group (we meet together for our lesson on Fast Sunday's)
I did the approach of each girl needs to *experience* the Cultural Arts. I had them first
list some "Cultural Arts" on the chalk board. Then I asked them why we have them
and how do they make us feel?
Then I handed out a paper that had some things listed on it: (with each one having a space
below it so the girls could write their feelings about each one)
Music--Popular, Christmas, Instrumental
Sculpture: Olive wood carving, porcelain statue
Photography: a man smoking, Temple Square with the Christmas lights (These were easy since
my Husband is a photographer)
Painting: I showed a picture from Greg Olsen. The one entitled "Reason for the
Season"
Poem/Literature: Footprints in the Sand
Acting/Theatre: I showed a 3 minutes clip from "Lamb of God"
Then after all of these were presented (each one took about 1-2 minutes) I asked the girls
how they felt about each one. Then I explained to them that they have just experienced the
Cultural Arts. They were amazed that they weren't all boring.
I then gave them each a candy cane with a copy of the story "Footprints in the
Sand" attached to it. We then had our 10 minutes testimony meeting, and there were
many who expressed a love for dance or music, that have never thought about it's impact on
them before.
The lesson went very well. Better than expected. The girls actually came up to me after
and expressed thanks for opening their eyes to such wonderful things.
