I just gave that lesson yesterday. I
included an experiment in positive thinking that my daughter had learned
in school. One person is sent out while the group is told what to do.
Then she comes back in and is told to hold her arm up in front of her
and try not to let another girl, who is chosen, push it down. While she
is out of the room the class is told to think negative thoughts when the
girl comes back in. Then the whole procedure is done again with the
class thinking positive thoughts. It's supposed to be easier to hold the
arm up the second time. The idea is that with positive thinking going on
there is an actual energy to make a job easier. This has worked before
when we tried it in our family home evening, but we didn't have a
success in class yesterday. I made the mistake of choosing the most
bubbly, upbeat, positive girl to send out of the room, and when she came
back in no one could think negatively!
I included a handout with this quote from President Hinckley and pointed
out what an optimistic man he is:
"It isn't as bad as you sometimes think it is. It all works out.
Don't worry. I say that to myself every morning. It will all work out.
Put your trust in God,
and move forward with faith
and confidence
in the future.
The Lord will not forsake us.
He will not forsake us . . .
If we will
put our
trust in Him,
if we will pray to Him,
if we will live worthy
of his blessings,
He will hear our prayers."
