Contributed by: Tanya Twood@beta.tricity.wsu.eduOn the board I usually write a
quote, kind of a discussion topic to start the lesson. This week it will be, "It is
our duty to obey God's commandments, not to direct His counsels. -- Author unknown
I plan on starting out with Pres. Kimball's story about the tidal wave then moving on to
this..
Object lesson: You will need 20 to 30 lengths of thread, each about a yard long.
The fibers of the flax plant are woven into linen. If you were to pull a thread from a
piece of linen fabric, it would be very similar to the one I am holding. (Show the girls
one of the threads).
If I were to tie this thin piece of thread around your neck and try to lead you away,
would you be easily led, or do you think you could struggle free? (It would not be hard to
break the thread and get free.) If this thread were to represent sin, could it still be
broken? (Ask one of the girls to break the thread.)
Invite one of the girls to hold her hand out, palm up. Ask the others to help you identify
some small sins (such as immodesty, little white lies, unclean videos, movies, or books,
etc.). As each of the sins are named, lay a string over the girls upturned hand.
Sin can begin with "just one thing", but it can lead to greater sin. Satan gains
power by making evil appear pleasing, natural or even good in today's world.
Add a string as you repeat these familiar sentences. Have you heard anyone say,"I'm
not hurting anyone." It's great, just try it." Everyone else does it, it's no
big deal." If you love me, show me." "It isn't healthy to ignore those
urges." We have appetites and need to feed them." Quit trying to be
perfect." It's perfectly normal these days, don't be so old fashioned."
Ask someone to read 2 Nephi 26:22
As the scripture is being read, pick up the pile of thread form the girl's hand,
straighten if needed, and twist the thread to form a rope. When we sin it is easy to
justify ourselves, then we continue on the same course until we have provided Satan with
strong enough rope to lead us astray. Is it easy now to break the ties binding us to
Satan? No, it is not easy, although it is not impossible.
We will then probably go through the questionaire.
I will then tell some stories about obedience, what happen when they were obedient and
some about what happened when they were not. I will not use the examples from the lesson,
the girls think that those stories are cheesy but I will use some church related stories.
I have some ideas, I just have to find them.
