Get In The Boat

I loved Russell M. Nelsons talk about the
boat in the supplemental material, so I based a lot of my lesson around that. I had little
toy boats on the table and one big inflatable raft in the room complete with oars and
life vest. I gave a shortened lesson as in the manual, complete with diagrams, quotes, and
scriptures suggested. But then spent a lot of time on how important it is to "get in
the boat" and "stay in the boat". I had a handout with the quote
"We are first to get "on the boat" with Him. Then we are to stay with Him.
And if we don't "get out of the boat" before we should, we shall reach His
kingdom, where we will be lifted up to eternal life." Elder Russell M. Nelson I
included a clip art of a boat, too. I likened the life vest to Christ, and that if we
accidentally fall out of the boat we have a life vest who can save us through repentance.
Our YW Pres. happens to be married to a coast guard man, and she brought up a good point,
that I loved. If you fall out of the boat, the longer you are in the water the more
susceptible to permanent injuries, and also the further you drift from the boat the less
likely you are to be found and rescued. We stressed the importance of staying in the boat
(holding the iron rod, per se) and not falling out accidentally or purposely, about how
difficult it is to get back in the boat. But that it is possible. We also talked about all
the blessings for staying in the boat. Worked well for us. Maybe it would work well for
someone else too.
