I did this lesson a couple of weeks ago.
For an attention-getter to start the lesson, I got a very difficult maze and made copies
for each girl. I gave them some time to work on the maze, knowing it wouldn't be possible
for them to accomplish the task in such a little time. It was interesting to listen to
their comments. They were perfect for the analogy, such as, "This is too hard.",
"I'm going to give up.", "I'm going to try from the end and work
forward." etc. Then after they struggled for a while I asked them if they would like
me to help them. Of course they were eager, except for one girl. I told her she could
ignore me and continue on her own if she chose. It didn't take her long, when she saw the
other girls having success, for her to want direction. Then I gave them directions like go
up two "streets" and turn right, then go under a "street" and turn
left at the first chance, etc. There were still some who got "lost" and needed
me to show them how to "get back on the path." Then I likened the maze to our
earthly lives, and the maze that they can be with so many paths to choose and choices to
make. We can struggle on our own and have to keep "erasing" or we can ask for
help from someone who knows the path, and can see the beginning and the end at the same
time. I also talked about what would happen if we gave up because it was just too hard. I
also addressed the fact that we can't do our lives from the end and work back to the
beginning. So some of the tricks that may work with a maze won't work with our lives. That
led in beautifully to the lesson and really got their attention.
Many times during the lesson, I made reference back to the maze, and actually the girls
did too in their comments, so I know it helped clarify, not muddle up their thoughts.
For a handout, I found a chocolate maze at Target, in the Easter candy section. I wrote
something like: "It's aMAZEing how your patriarchal blessing gives you the help
needed to travel through the maze of life from your Heavenly Father who gives you
directions from above, who knows the beginning and end, and loves you."

2004)I loved the
chocolate maze idea for a handout but couldn't find any. In it's
place I found those little toy mazes in the party section at any
store, I took off the back and replaced it with my own back with the
saying: "It's aMAZEing how your patriarchal blessing gives you the
help needed to travel through the maze of life." (taken from Cindy's
idea). I hot glued my replacement back on so that it wouldn't come
off easily.
I couldn't get onto the site
suggested for the personalized mazes but found another one:
This site was able to do mazes in
each of the girls names too.

(Make) an individual maze for each girl using her own name. I thought that was an
even better metaphor of having them trying to work through their
life alone or with personal guidance. :)

Here's is how I tweaked and created a maze page using
Alison's idea. It
ended up being an 8 1/2 x 11 maze that said "A-MAZING BLESSINGS". This is
rather detailed information, some of you gals may not need it. There's probably
easier ways, if you figure one out, go for it.
Going to (a maze builder), I typed in the word
A-MAZING and they created a maze in a few seconds. Then I hit the "Print
Screen" button on my keyboard.
On my computer, I went under "Accessories" and opened the "Paint"
program. Under Edit, I clicked "Paste" and the maze appeared along with all the
"stuff" on the webpage.
I wanted to get rid of the "stuff" so I just had the maze word. So I
dropped down "File" and clicked "Save As" and saved it as a JPEG file.
(JPEG files can be used in my Photo programs.) Watch where the file is saved.
I always save YW related things in a YW folder so I can find it later.
Then I opened up my Adobe Photo Deluxe program (any program that allows you to crop a
picture would work). I opened up the file my maze was saved under. Then
was able to crop the picture so only the maze word "A-MAZING" was remaining and
saved it as a JPEG file.
I did the same with the word "BLESSINGS".
Finally, I opened up my Publisher 99 program and pasted in both words. Because the words
are long I turned the page to Landscape and put the word "A-MAZING" above the
word "BLESSINGS". Then just stretched the words to the size and shape I
wanted.
I did one more thing that was nice to have. I placed a red arrow with the word
"START" at the beginning of each word, and an arrow with the word
"FINISH" at the end of each word.
This whole process just took a few minutes to create.
