Growing in Self-Reliance

| Submitted by: The Terry Family I handed out a laminated card that said (with Wonton font) Fortunate is the Young Woman Who realizes Self-Reliance Has less To do with Reliance on self And more to do with Reliance on God. Using thin ribbon, I attached a wooden bracelet that had oriental characters written on them. Then I put the card/bracelet into a Chinese take-out box, along with a bunch of fortune cookies. I purchased the wooden oriental bracelets at Wal-Mart for about $ .75 each. (They are the same as the ones the girls get in the mall for $10!) I found them in the toy department, they come in packages of 2 or 4, and even come in the 7 Values colors! I purchased the Chinese take-out boxes at a local restaurant for about $ .18 each. I printed the cards out on yellow paper and backed them with purple cardstock. Then laminated them, punched holes and attached the bracelet with thin white ribbon. What I wanted to emphasize was that self-reliance has less to do with self and more to do with God. For part of the class time, we discussed the question of "In what ways did these women show how God-reliance helped them obtain Self-reliance? The Daughters of Onitah: Abraham 1:1-11. The Queen of Sheba: 1 Kings 10:1-13." The book "Daughters of God" by Michael Wilcox has wonderful insights about these women. It was great to hear the girls discuss the examples of these great women in the scriptures as they answered the question. |
