YW Music Director
| Contributed
by: beckyspoints@yahoo.com beckyspoints@yahoo.com I've been to the last two Open Houses and both emphasized the
importance of a YW Music Director. It was strongly encouraged that we consider an adult
for this very important calling. Here is a quote from Sis. Nadaulds Talk:
"The Church Handbook of Instructions page 218 talks about a ward Young Women music
director. It has not been the tradition to have a music director for Young Women as we do
in Primary, Relief Society, and all the other organizations. This has been to the
detriment of music among the teenagers. Music directors can train young women to conduct
hymns and accompany. They also form youth choirs or smaller groups including duets,
quartets, etc. She can bless the young men as well as the young women at Mutual. Discuss
this with Young Men leaders." Stand Ye in Holy Places" Margaret D Nadauld Spring
2002 p4
We prayerfully considered this as a presidency and did call a very mature and capable
Young Woman to be the music director. We also called a pianist, another capable and
responsible Young Woman. They plan all the music for Sunday meetings as well as all the
music for Mutual Opening exercises. They teach the girls new music and have lead them in
Sacrament Meeting performances. We have encouraged them to use music as a teaching tool
for the young women and they have by having special music practices and by having us learn
songs that go with our values or theme.
The good side of having Responsible Young Women in this calling is that they are always in
attendance at the meetings. It has been an excelent growth experience for them (and I
don't mean in their musical talent - as much as their learning to be leaders and take
responsibility etc..) We have always treated them as leaders, inviting them to board
meetings, talking to them on an adult level etc. The down side has been that many of the
Young Women don't take these two girls as seriously as they would an adult leader. I
would not call a Young Woman to this calling who would not seek the spirit and be
dependable.
I think the reason there has been such an emphasis on having a Young Woman Music Director
and the recommendation that it be an adult, is that music is SO important to our meetings.
A good music reverences the girls, invites the spirit and opens our hearts and minds to be
taught. When a hymn is thrown together at the last minute, the piano played with one
finger or very poorly, the conductor is unprepared or giggly, than the spirit is not
properly cultivated. Music is a powerful force in the lives of these Young Women. It is
our responsibility as leaders to use this force for the good of our Young Women.
Going to the last two music workshops has really opened my eyes and expanded my vision as
to what an important part music can play in our lessons, meetings and mutual.
