Do We
Effectively Use the Tools We've Been Given, or Are We Hunting for Bigger & Better
Ones?
In sharing some thoughts with another list member, I would like to toss out an idea
here. There are many "activity" ideas being shared which is a great
resource for all, but another area that we have a need for is in the "actual
teaching" of the lessons. Boyd K. Packer gave a thought provoking talk about
teaching and that it is gospel principles learned that change lives.... something like
that....and the importance of teaching rather than entertaining. I love fun
activities and many many have been posted that teach a principle while having fun.
Keep up the good work °Ü° - just one suggestion - our InfoBase could be much more
effective if we also post the lesson we are reinforcing and the value it represents.
In the words of Pam (member of the yw@ldscn.com -
then this list would really "rock"!
2 Nephi 9:45.....come unto that God who is the rock of your salvation and D&C ll:24
...build upon the Lord's rock, which is His gospel. (A fun way to get the girls
digging in their scriptures-use their lingo and look for scriptures references °Ü°
How many are following the counsel to teach the lesson on Sunday and then reinforcing
that during the following mutual night. This requires a lot of pre-planning
and making sure that the class presidencies know what topic is being taught so they can
come up with an activity to reinforce....which also insures that we are planning with a
purpose and teaching a gospel principle in the process...this is even possible when
planning combined activities with the young man. All they need to know is what
lesson is being taught. One of the great benefits of this list could be a
discussion of how to teach the lessons effectively. We could come up with some
wonderful lesson plans that would really touch the girls, strengthen their testimonies and
give them the opportunity to be filled with the spirit. What do you
think????
In recent months President Gordon B. Hinckley has called on us to hold our people close to
the Church, ....In issuing this call President Hinckley has reminded that we all need at
least three things to remain firmly in the faith-a friend, a responsibility, and
"[nourishing] by the good word of God."
Inspired instruction in the home and in the Church helps provide this crucial element of
nourishing by the good word of God. --Jeffrey R. Holland
Eternal life will come only as men and women are taught with such effectiveness that they
change and discipline their lives. ---Gordon B. Hinckley
Inspired teaching must never become a lost art in the Church, and we must make certain our
quest for it does not become a lost tradition.
