SPRING 2002 YOUNG WOMEN WORKSHOPS - Notes taken March 28, 2002

PERSONAL PROGRESS [Julie Beck]

Every word in the new Personal Progress book was prayerfully written and reviewed. Please read every word/message in the new book - don't just jump to the "how to" sections.

The new symbol for youth is the temple. It was chosen by The First Presidency - it is not merely for decoration. The symbol will help young women be prepared for temple endowment, temple marriage, help her understand God's will for her. When a young woman completes the YW program, will the temple be written in her heart? . or will she just have a piece of jewelry (the medallion).

The parent's role is greatly increased in the revised Personal Progress program. What are the primary responsibilities of parents? (see PP book, Guidebook). YW leaders used to turn to parents and ask for help with Personal Progress. Now we go to parents and ask, "What can we do to help you with your daughter's progress?" The new Personal Progress Specialists . are now parents!

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE (see printed copy of Sister Nadauld's message)

The revised Personal Progress book went through committees, editing, correlation, approval by the Quorum of the Twelve and First Presidency, printing, and was distributed to stake presidents and bishops in boxes. You YW leaders came from a far greater place and were designed by one who is perfect. You were sent to earth right now, today - the Lord will direct you. Help young women catch the vision of what they can really become, what they could do, help them find the glory of their lives.

QUESTION-ANSWER SESSION

1. Is it important (mandatory) that young women do the required Value Experiences first, then the optional? Do they need to complete the Values before the Projects?

Not too many things are "mandatory" in the Church [except for Temple recommends] but it is strongly recommended that young women complete the required Experiences first . then the optional . then the Projects, for they need to understand the principles before they have experiences in practical application.

2. Transition to the new PP book

Make it easy, make it simple! One for one straight across from the old book to the new book. Make the transfer to revised book a pleasant experience.  The young women will reflect your attitude.

3. New YW Emblems

The new gold emblems take the place of three pieces of jewelry. Make the emblem presentations an important occasion!

4. Have the Value Colors changes?

The Value colors have NOT changed (to pastel or other). See Church Handbook of Instructions. it says "red," "blue," etc. The new PP book has lighter colors because of the finish of the paper and the design colors of the book.

5. Will there be changes in the YW Camp program or certification?

We do not anticipate any changes in the camp program or certification.

6. What about combining age-groups for Sunday lessons when there are small groups of young women?

This is a local priesthood decision. Bring your concerns to ward or stake councils.

7. What are the Stake or multi-stake annual events for youth (music, dance, drama, roadshows, etc.)

Church leaders have reversed their decision to hold multi-stake or stake annual events for youth. These are now optional. Youth benefit from participating in music, dance, drama, speech, roadshows. The first question you should ask as you select activities is "what are their needs?" Determine if an event you are planning will be beneficial to the youth in your stake - focus on testimony-building experiences. Pray for inspiration and guidance.

8. Will "For The Strength Of Youth" be available in Spanish?

It has already been printed in Portuguese. We expect a Spanish version to be printed soon.

9. What about combining Young Women and Relief Society for Sunday lessons or Enrichment?

These are local priesthood decisions. Meet the needs of your young women. Relief Society sisters need more opportunities to learn to love the young women. We are trying to teach the principle of flexibility. Remember inspiration comes more quickly from heaven than it does from Salt Lake.

10. When will the new YW Theme posters, medallions, and other YW materials be available?

Some materials are available now for those who sent in ward/stake order forms. YW Theme posters and medallions will be available second week of April.
