SPRING 2002 YOUNG WOMEN WORKSHOPS - Notes taken March 28, 2002

ORIENTATION [Workshop presented by Carol Thomas, Laurie Swim, Julie Beck]

WHERE DO YOU TURN FOR HELP? [Carol Thomas]

What will you miss the most when you are released from your calling? Your friends? "And again I say unto you, my friends, for from henceforth I shall call you friends, it is expedient that I give unto you this commandment that ye become even as my friends." (D&C 84:77). We should become "friends" of the Savior, teach His gospel with His power.

[Sister Thomas] . I will miss the opportunity to bear testimony. My testimony is strengthened as I bear witness of gospel truths. How can we get testimonies deep in the hearts of young women?

When you have a question - when you need help - where do you turn? Do you call your counselors? Do you check the internet? Do you call a cousin or sister in another state to get her ideas? How do we teach our YW leaders to turn to the scriptures and the Lord for all answers? Noah was commanded to build an ark. The brother of Jared was required to build barges. Nephi built a large sailing ship. Why were the three ships different? The manner of boat depended on their personal situations, needs, circumstances. Your needs may be different from another ward/stake. Don't just copy what another ward/stake has done. Learn to rely on the Lord (personal revelation) for inspiration and direction so you can strengthen the testimonies of those you serve. What limits your effectiveness in receiving personal revelation in your calling?

Boyd K. Packer: The Lord will direct our efforts, he will not direct our inertia . A soldier serving in the military didn't attend church. His father asked him why he didn't attend. He lived 3 blocks from a chapel. There was a bulletin near his bunk announcing the meeting times. His answer: "Nobody picked me up!"

Don't be so dependent on handbooks and written instructions. Boyd K. Packer: "Inspiration comes more quickly from the Lord than from Salt Lake" (Church headquarters).
