MUTUAL [Laurie Swim]
Parent and Leader Guidebook - new emphasis on Mutual. Parents appreciate knowing that
youth will meet on the same day, the same time, the same place every week.
President Monson: "Information is a friend of inspiration." In other words,
"research precedes revelation." It is important to have accurate information.
President Hinckley is a great example. In meetings when a new temple or Church building is
being discussed, he wants to know all the specific details such as where the highways are,
where houses/businesses are located, etc. Where do you find information about and great
ideas for Mutual? What are your resources?
(Answers from audience)
Church Handbook of Instructions; New Guidebook (Parents, Youth Leaders); From the girls
themselves (needs, interests); Direction from Bishop - Priesthood leaders; YW Values; For
The Strength Of Youth; Sunday lessons; The Activity Book (contains 300 ideas); Resource
Room in the Relief Society Building (Salt Lake); Church website; Parents of young women;
New Era (back page has ideas with practical application).
Remember: Don't just copy Noah's ark! Your situation might require sails - like on Nephi's
ship. Seek personal inspiration. Once you have your information, ask the Lord what He
wants you to do with it!
Mutual is the practical application of gospel principles. The learning curve: (1) first
you have to hear it, (2) then you have to see it, (3) if you see it, hear it, and also do
it, the learning curve is dramatically increased (Alma - experiment upon the Word).
For The Strength Of Youth is a key resource for planning Mutual activities. See the
December 10, 2001 memo from Church Headquarters (leaders may wish to select one standard
from FTSOY each month.).
Seek the Lord on how you can best structure and plan meaningful Mutuals, how you can
personalize and apply gospel principles. Remember that once the three ships were built,
the navigation was up to the Lord.
Elder Eyring (April 2000) "The Holy Ghost will be your companion. The Holy Ghost will
tell you what to do when your own abilities and efforts are not enough. You may have
confidence in the Lord's service. The Savior will help you do what He has called you to
do."
