YOUNG WOMEN MUSIC WORKSHOP - "Make A Joyful Noise"

Workshop presented by Sharon Larsen, Sister Booth

Ours hymns are NOT referred to by page numbers. We refer to them as HYMN NUMBERS because many hymns take more than one page in the hymnbook.

The Primary chorister in the ward - is really the gospel doctrine teacher!

Music helps bring the Spirit to youth activities. A pianist played "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief" while we were asked to hum one line and think of a time we were an instrument in the Lord's hand by providing service for someone. Then we were asked to hum the second phrase of the hymn and think of a time when we were the recipient of service.

The preface to the Church hymnbook and the Handbook of Instructions have similar goals.

Youth do not have a songbook like Primary does - because music for youth constantly changes.

The Church Handbook of Instructions states guidelines for what is appropriate [music].

Sister Booth asked what gospel principle our youth needed emphasized - modesty was suggested. We were divided into groups and given a minute or two to write lyrics that dealt with the issue of modesty to the melody "If you chance to meet a frown" or "Give said the little stream." One group came forward and sang the following:

"No, you may not leave this house

With your navel showing
Put a sweatshirt over that
And then you may get going."

Create songs for youth that teach principles - especially at Mutual and YW Camp. Music can help teach gospel principles. The words and the music will stay with youth. When youth become involved, the principles taught will remain with them.

Mutual opening exercises: Youth love to see pictures/slides of themselves. Show slides of youth with the background music "Shall the Youth Of Zion Falter [True to the Faith], "I Walk by Faith," or some other inspiring music. Use Church videos or part of them and combine with music to teach or reinforce gospel principles.

See Church Handbook of Instructions for more information about the YW Music Director (page 218), Music training programs (page 293), and the Ward Music Director (page 292).
