Parable of the Crab
- Don't Clam Up

This
could be really cute - You could come dressed up in Clam Diggers, have Crab Sandwiches,
Cookies shaped like Crabs legs, or even Clam Soup (for an early meeting) and also talk
about not "Claming Up" °Ü°

I heard this 'parable' in the context of nursing, but it has application whenever women
work together (or against each other.)
It is said in New England fishing communities that you never have to put a lid on a bucket
filled with live crabs. Why? Because as soon as one crab looks as though it
will reach above the others and climb to safety, the others quickly grab at it and pull it
back to the bottom. Do we, as women, sabotage each other to make sure that we don't
feel guilty that we are not achieving what another woman is? If the 'crab bucket'
mentality has infected your ward, perhaps discussing it openly will help to eliminate it.
As leaders, do we lead, or control? We have the Savior and Satan as examples.
Remember, Satan wanted everyone to be perfect, too. That would have led to perfect
Homemaking meetings where everyone attended, and perfect RS meetings. If we return
to basic principles of love and teaching our sisters to be prepared in all areas of their
lives (you know, the six in Perfecting the Saints) it won't matter if the tables are
decorated or one class gets more attendance than another.
As the leader, do we grow by getting handed an assignment that we don't have to prepare
for? How much better to actually communicate how much help we really will need, or
actually say NO if we can't carry it out. If each sister knows how much we love
them, we don't risk hurting each other's feelings as much as we come to agreement on any
particular assignment. Ideally, many of these technical items can be worked out at
RS board meetings in atmosphere of openness and teamwork. The presidency can set a
wonderful tone of unity and ask the sisters what ideas they have to contribute to the
perceived needs and goals. "That they may be one..."
