Ideas for Starting YW On Time

  • Give the girls a "penny candy," a cute little poem, or something small for coming on time, 3 minutes after the hour. Thank each one for coming on time.

  • Have a periodic class contest. First class seated in time, gets a small prize.

  • Have the girls assigned ahead of time for opening prayer, spiritual thought, etc., so they know we'll be expecting them early.

  • Assign the presidency to help get the room in order. President can throw back the curtains, secretary can set up the visual display, counselors set up the chairs.

  • Start without the girls. Get the room setup, then start.

  • Point out to the girls, that the presidency and teachers are there to serve them. The girls sustained them in Sacrament meeting. This means they support the presidency and teachers. Part of supporting them means they'll be there on time, so they can be served.

  • Try to teach them about the amount of work goes into each lesson, and the Lord really has a lot of meaningful things for them to here. Make sure the girls know what time you expect them to be in their seats. They may not know!

  • Talk to the teacher(s), occupying room before YW, outside of class time. Ask them how they would like the time issue handled. Stress the importance that you get the time allotted for your class.

  • Bring up the support YW need in Ward Council meeting, honoring the bell in particular. Point out that the teachers put in a lot of time to prepare, and so as not to frustrate them, you want them to be given a reasonable amount of time to present their lesson.

  • Speak to the Inservice or Teaching Improvement Coordinator to present a lesson on ending on time or at least a handout.

  • Make sure there is a clock available to the teachers who occupy room before YW.

  • Talk to the parents, or send out a little note, asking them for support in getting their daughter to class on time. Speak about the problem as a general problem, no specific names. Try to explain how tight the time is from one class to the next. Let them know the exact time you would like the girls in their seat.
