Under the direction of your bishop, the
class adviser and the member of the YW presidency responsible for the Beehives should make
arrangements to meet with the New Beehive and her parents to help orient them to the YW
program.
A packet of orientation material to give to
your New Beehives could include: For the Strength of the Youth Pamphlet, Personal Progress
Book, calendar, and information you have given to the Young Women for the year.
Explain "Mutual" and that the YW
in the class presidencies, with the help of the Advisor and Counselor over that class,
plan activities to reinforce the Sunday lessons. They work very hard to make sure the
activities are meaningful and worthwhile. A parent can help support these efforts by
asking what is happening at YW and offering to help.
Give a brief explanation of Young Women in
Excellence and encourage her to choose a value to focus on during the year. Give her a few
examples of things that have been done in the past to help her have a clear understanding
of the program. Follow up in a few weeks to see what her value is.
Make sure that she has an appointment set up
with the Bishop to be interviewed and then recognized in Sacrament Meeting for her
advancement from Primary to Young Women.
On her first Sunday in Young Women, make her
feel special. Introduce her to the all the young women during opening exercises. It would
be nice if one of the other young women could take a few to do a "Friendship
Spotlight" on her. This is also a good time to present her with the Young Women Torch
Necklace and poster of YW Motto "Stand for Truth and Righteousness".
A young women is introduced during New
Beginnings after she turns l2. If you have someone who will be turning l2 during the first
few months of the new year, you might want to invite her and her parents to attend the New
Beginnings program held before her l2th birthday. If she turns l2 after the first few
months of a new year, wait until the next year to introduce.
Encourage parents to sit down with their
daughter once a month to review her goals and sign off any value goals that have been
completed. Encourage parents to always know what "value" she is working on so
they can offer help and encouragement when needed.
And most important, the role of the Young
Women leader is to support, not replace parents. Our goals are to strengthen testimonies
and families. We offer our service to work hand-in-hand with them to raise righteous
daughters of God.
