Here
are the notes I took from the Young Woman Orientation yesterday in the Joseph Smith
Memorial Building. The speaker was Sister Carol Thomas. While I've done my
best to accurately reflect what was discussed at this meeting - please take what I write
with a grain of salt and don't rely on it as "gospel" as these are only my
personal notes. Thanks.
Young Women General Open House Orientation
11:00 am 9/27/2002 JSMB Chapel
Speaker: Carol Thomas
There are 3 Main Parts to the Young Woman's Program 1)Sunday Lessons 2)Mutual
and Events 3)Personal Progress.
1) Sunday Lessons: Have all leaders and advisors use the book "Teaching, No Greater
Call." The lesson manuals are "not new," so it is ok to
supplement them with the Supplemental Material List found in the back of every General
Conference addition of the Ensign. Keep President Hinkley's Video of the 6 Be's
alive - use is as a supplement to lessons often. Teach Modesty. Bare Testimony - have the
teacher ALWAYS bare testimony - don't ever miss this opportunity.
2) Mutual and Events: These activities should be from 1 - 11/2 hours (recommended).
Keep in mind the Feb 11, 1999 letter from the First Presidency (aka don't take the
kids away from home too much). Mutual is the "Delivery system of the
Gospel." Activities should be at the same time in the same place every week with few
exceptions. YM and YW should be holding "combined exercises" before
activities (we will be getting more info on this). Use mutual as a Missionary tool. Call a
music director to teach the gospel through music. Whatever you do, do with prayer and
inspiration. A fireside or dance are in ADDITION to mutual activities.
3) Personal Progress: The PP program has been simplified to emphasize the Savior,
Scriptures, Family and Value of Women. Girls should be completing a minimum of 9
activities per year - they are to work at their own pace. Have older girls mentor
younger girls. Get parents more involved with PP - invite fathers to sign off activities -
invite mothers to help Young Woman with PP. Transition to new program - have Laurels
finish up and get medallion if almost completed. Have all younger girls transfer to
the new book. Leaders are still encouraged to earn their own medallions - must have
served 1 year, do 3 experiences and 3 projects. Leaders may earn the new medallion
even if they have already earned the old one.
Question and answer period:
Stay with lessons as scheduled. They contain a full spectrum of Gospel instruction.
Occasional changes can be made for special events.
"Soles are saved on the ward level" we should have more ward activities
and less stake activities (there are exceptions).
