Music Workshop notes

Omni 1:26
Whole soul

Be molded to your Calling

Dallin Oaks quote:   "I asked myself what kind of apostle I would be.   Would I be a lawyer who had been called to be an apostle, or would I be an apostle who used to be a lawyer?  I concluded that the answer to this question depended upon whether I would try to shape my calling to my own personal qualifications and experience, or whether I would undertake the painful process of trying to shape myself to my calling.   "Would I try to perform my calling in the world's ways, or would I try to   determine and follow the Lord's ways?  I made up my mind that I would try to change myself to fit my calling, that I would try to measure up to the qualifications and spiritual stature of an apostle"  (The Lord's Way, 7)

I make my calling look like me, because that's what I'm like - wrong way.  Would I try to perform my calling the world's way, or would I try to determine  and follow the Lord's ways?  'be you' - she had us hold up our right hand high with the fingers together and
the thumb sticking out she had someone from the audience come up and hold up their hand she tried to put a glove on their hand while they just kept their hand the same way - fingers together and thumb sticking out.  Of course it didn't go on right, it didn't fit.  She asked the person how it felt feels wrong, uncomfortable, doesn't like it.    We try to shove our callings on, just like she tried to shove the glove on.   We need to mold ourselves to the calling.  Then she had the person help her put the glove on the person could move, flex, wiggle her fingers - glove went on easily, the fit was great.  When she molded herself to her calling, it was a perfect fit

Instead of 'You need to sing with us', How can we help Karen, who needs love and fellowship?  Focus switch

What I need vs. What SHE needs.  Allow Heavenly Father to help you become something more than you thought

Discussion:
Spiritual Priorities  vs  Musical Priorities

Miracles happen - There was a woman in our meeting who gave the example of being called to be  the primary pianist when she didn't even play the piano.  The calling was hard, if not impossible.  Others were talking about her behind her back - she felt bad.  She didn't even have a piano in her home to practice.  She would play one handed during Primary - tried to play two handed but she couldn't do it.    During Sacrament meeting performance she could play two handed and it went perfectly.  After Sacrament meeting performance she couldn't play two handed.   She was able to play songs she will never be able to play again

Our calling may to hard, but with Heavenly Father's help we can do ANYTHING.  We believe IN God , but do we Believe Him?
Ours is the Obligation and Opportunity to nourish the soul.  When we focus on the needs of the girls, things work

D & D 11:21

Seek not to declare my work, but first seek to obtain my work, and then shall your tongue be loosed.  The pianist's hands were loosed.  she was embarrassed, criticized

Where do we find the Word -
 Scriptures
 Patriarchal blessings
 Prayer
  "Our Savior's Love"

Say to the YW - who here needs a song?

J. Reuben Clark, Jr.- "The youth of the Church are hungry for things of the Spirit; they are eager to learn the gospel, and they want it straight, undiluted...These students as they come to you are spiritually working on toward a maturity which they will early reach if you but feed them the right food..."

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland - "Are we really nurturing our...members in a way that will sustain them when the stresses of life appear?  Or are we giving them a kind of theological Twinkie - spiritually empty calories?  President John Taylor once called such teaching "fried froth,' the kind of thing you could eat all day and yet finish feeling totally unsatisfied."  (Conference Report, Apr. 1998, 32-33)

Are we feeding the youth or are we feeding them like this - hand up, fingers together

Herber J. Grant - "There is a great deal lost in the home of the people by not having the songs of Zion sung therein.  Many a missionary robs himself of strength and power and ability to accomplish good, and to make friends, by not knowing how to sing...   "It is not the eloquence that you possess which will carry conviction to the hearts of the people, but it is the Spirit of Almighty God that is burning in your hearts, and your desire for the salvation of souls.  Brigham Young said that the Spirit of the Lord would do more to convert people than the eloquence of men.  And I say that the singing of the songs of Zion, though imperfectly, with
the inspiration of God, will touch the hearts of the honest more effectively than if sung well without the Spirit of God.  Sing with the Spirit of God.  Love the words you sing.  I love the songs of Zion."

Love Those You Teach - even when they are not so nice.  John 4:18  Before you bear you testimony you have fear.  When bearing testimony, there is no fear - focus is on our testimony

We have so many new people in our ward.  Our ward members do not really know one another.  How can we get them acquainted?  How can we move forward in our goal of strengthening families?  Fine musical  things will come to pass

What can we do to let the YW know they are also important?
We need to focus on the spiritual meaning of Christmas this year?

Manuel - Teaching, No greater calling

YW Music - singing around the campfire

Walk Tall your a Daughter of God - written out of a need

1.  Strengthen YW's faith in Jesus Christ and His Atonement
2.  Help the YW serve and bless others
3.  Inspire YW to draw strength and comfort in their personal lives
4.  Increase the YW 's gratitude for the blessing

BE CONCERNED with Results

Elder Dallin Oaks
"A gospel teacher...will measure the success of the teaching and testifying by its impact on the lives of the learners.  A gospel teacher will never be satisfied with just delivering a message of preaching a sermon.  A superior gospel teacher wants to assist in the Lord's work to bring eternal life to His children."

ACCOMPLISHING the Lord's Work through Music
 1. molded to our callings
 2.  love those we teach
 3. Be concerned with results.

He will make you better then you could ever be by yourself

The woman teaching then concluded with:  My whole focus was what did you need to hear today  Work with the Young Women even when they are stupid.
