"Walk
With Christ Presentation"
| Contributed by: Sue Griffith-Rainey Using
a variety of material from this list, I did a revised version of the "Walk With
Christ" that begins on the Sunday before Easter and concludes on Easter Sunday. I
followed the lesson format provided to the list by Alice (Easter Presentation) a couple of weeks ago, and as
we talked about each day in the last week of Christ's life, the YW put together a small
basket of plastic eggs to use as a countdown toward Easter (to be used like a Christmas
advent calendar). Here's what we did:
- Had pictures of Christ's last week (from the library)
all around the room)
- Handed out the quiz "Jesus' Last Days" and had them complete it while
playing a tape of "I Know That My Redeemer Lives"
- Handed out a zip lock bag with 8 pastel-colored Easter
eggs, numbered 1-8
- Beginning with "The Day of Popularity"
(Sunday), talked about how Christ spent each day of his remaining days on earth.
- After talking about Day 1 (Day of Popularity) handed
out a slip of paper to each YW that read: DAY 1: DAY OF POPULARITY (SUNDAY) Luke 19:35-38.
Today I will be more Christ-like in the way I treat others (Red Balloon)
- After sharing the object lesson with the red balloon,
each YW was given a red balloon to also place inside egg #1, and a story (sorted
from the many stories I've saved from this list) to go along with the Day 1 affirmation.
- We did this with all 8 eggs, so that each YW has a
brief "family devotional" they can present each day during the week before
Easter Sunday, with a scripture, an affirmation, a token representing the affirmation, and
a spiritual story to remind them of the affirmation.
I didn't provide the baskets and grass, but for the eggs, tokens and copies the whole
thing cost about $1.25 per girl. It was a wonderful lesson and I think it put a stronger
focus on Christ and the final days of his life. Hopefully it will assist the YW in
thinking about him more frequently next week as Easter approaches.
Here is the presentation: As you know, Easter, like Christmas, is more than just a
collection of traditions and fun. It's a time to commemorate the most sacred and
significant religious event in all the history of the world, the crucifixion and
resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. These two things combined, the
crucifixion and the resurrection, are called the ATONEMENT.
There are many important events that occurred in the week prior to Jesus' physical death
on the cross. Let's see how much we know about the last week of Jesus' life.
PASS OUT QUIZ AND PENCILS , PLAY "I KNOW THAT MY REDEEMER LIVES" IN BACKGROUND
Let's review our answers together, and after talking briefly about the Day of Anointing,
I'm going to pass out some bags containing 8 plastic Easter eggs that you will be able to
use to make reminders about Jesus' last days on earth. Each egg can be used for a great
morning devotional that you can share with your family each day, beginning next Sunday.
(PASS OUT EGGS)
Now let's discuss the Day of Popularity. This will be egg number 1 in your bag. This was
the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem in triumph. You might remember seeing the picture of
Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a donkey as people put palm fronds on the ground in front
of him. It's hard to imagine that in just 5 days from this day of triumph, he would be put
to death. As you think about this day, ask yourself if you would be one who cheered as
Christ rode into the city. This is a good day to think about the way you treat others on a
daily basis, and to decide to be encouraging and uplifting to all those you come in
contact with today.
INTRODUCE THE OBJECT LESSON OF THE
RED BALLOON, WHICH
REPRESENTS INDIVIDUAL WORTH, THEN HAND OUT A RED BALLOON ALONG WITH THE STRIP FOR DAY 1 TO
BE PLACED INSIDE EGG #1.
Day 2: Day of Authority
Discuss the activities of this day and ask, "Why do you think Jesus needed to cleanse
the temple?" We all have things we need to cleanse from our lives each day. This is
why our loving Heavenly Father provided us with the opportunity to repent. You may select
something important to you to try and "cleanse" from your life, but for our
activity today, we're going to try and cleanse the use of gossip from our lives.
AS YOU PASS OUT THE STRIP FOR DAY #2, TELL THE FOLLOWING STORY. AFTER TELLING THE STORY,
PASS OUT A FEATHER TO BE ADDED TO EGG #2.
Story:
The Feather
Day 3: Day of Conflict
Discuss activities of this day and ask the YW if they treat their brothers and sisters
with the same kindness as they would treat the Savior. Explain what it means to have
Jesus' image in your countenance, and pass out the item to be included in the egg for Day
3, a tiny mirror. Then pass out the strip for Day 3.
Affrimation: "His Image in your countenance" (song)
With no apparent beauty that man should Him desire, He was the promised Savior to purify
with fire. The world despised His plainness, but those who followed Him. Found love and
light and purity; a beauty from within.
(Chorus)
Have you received His image in your countenance? Does the Light of Christ shine in your
eyes? Will he know you when He comes again because you will be like him? When He sees you
will the Father know His child?
We seek for light and learning as followers of Christ. That all may see His goodness
reflected in our lives. When we receive His fullness and lose desire for sin, We radiate
His perfect love, a beauty from within.
(Repeat chorus)
The ways of man may tempt us and some will be deceived, preferring worldly beauty,
forgetting truth received. But whisp'rings of the Spirit remind us once again, That
lasting beauty, pure and clear, must come from deep within.
(Repeat chorus)
By His everlasting image in your eyes?
Day 4: Day of Rest
Ask the YW who they first turn to when they're having a bad day at school. Is it most
likely their friends? This is a day that Jesus, knowing what was soon to come, probably
remained with his friends. Ask the YW how they might want to spend the day with their
friends if they knew they only had another 2 days left to live? What would they do
together? Would the reminisce about great times spent together? This is a good day to
askyourself what kind of friend you are. Are you the type of friend that someone might
choose to spend their last day of rest before their death? Pass out the strip for Day 4
and then pass out 2 pom poms to each YW (this represents a story about friendship that
will be given them at the end...this should be explained to them!) Affirmation:
All I Would Ever Need
Day 5: Day of Fellowship
After discussing the events of this day, the Last Supper, the events in the Garden of
Gethsemane, Judas' betrayal, and Jesus' arrest, suggest to the YW that this would be
a good evening to think about the Last Supper as they're sharing dinner with their family.
Explain the great blessing we enjoy each week as we partake of the Sacrament in
remembrance of his body and his blood, shed for us. The affirmation for this day is a
reminder to remember the covenants we made at baptism to take his name upon us and
to try and be like him. Pass out the strip for Day 5 and a sacrament cup to be placed in
egg #5. Story: The Room
Day 6: Day of Suffering
I need to do further research to learn why this day is called Good Friday because it is a
day of great sadness and suffering for our Savior. Discuss the events of this day (from
the quiz) and suggest to the YW that they look at the clock periodically throughout the
day and think about the events that took place in Jesus' life on that Friday at the times
noted on the quiz. This is a day to reflect on his suffering and to make a decision to
Stand as a Witness of Him to make his suffering worth it. Ask them to think about whether
or not they're willing to trade in the worldly and worthless things of this life for the
treasures only He can provide. Then hand out the strip for Day 6 along with a short strand
of pearls (beads from the craft store you can buy on a spool in the bridal section). A
story will be given them at the end that also ties in with this. Story:
The Pearls
Day 7: Day of Silence
Discuss the events of this day and remind them that this was truly a day of morning for
Jesus' friends and family. This is a good day for quiet
reflection, a day to commit yourself to doing things as Jesus would do and to be more
forgiving as He would be. Then hand out the strip for Day 7 and the small wooden heart
(from the craft store) with the letters "WWJD" (What Would Jesus Do?) written on
the front. Story:
Forgiven Forever
Day 8: Day of Triumph (Easter Sunday)
Discuss the events of this day...the day the tomb was found empty. The day the angels
appeared to Mary Magdalene and tell her that, "He is
risen...He is not here." This is the day to ask yourself what you've discovered about
yourself as you've completed this Walk with Christ. This is the perfect day to begin again
and to find joy in the knowledge that He is risen! He is our Redeemer and He lives! Pass
out the strip that goes with Day 8. There is no token for this day as the egg represents
the empty tomb.
