| Contributed by: Kathy skjones13@hotmail.com 12 Days of Christmas activity. In our ward we do something a
little different, called Heart Families. Usually one of the Laurels heads it up for a
Laurel project. How it works is for the entire month of November, announcements are made,
the program is explained, and sign up sheets are available for those families who wish to
participate. At the end of November, the girl collects the sign up sheets and writes one
family's name on a slip of paper. This includes first and last names, and ages, of
everyone in the family. Then this is put in an envelope, sealed, and another participating
family's name is put on the outside. These are distributed throughout the week. The idea
is to then be a "secret Santa" to the family whose name you get.
During the month of December, your family must do
at least one thing for your "Heart Family". Usually, people do many
things. We've received books in the mail, goodies on the porch, a sidewalk shoveled at
night, wonderful notes, individual gifts, family gifts, and many other creative things.
It's fun to watch the ward members sneaking around and trying to leave things while no one
is looking.
Personally, I have found that the best time to make
a delivery is to slip out during the ward Christmas party, because everyone is at the
church and I'm pretty sure I won't get caught. The identity of the giving family is never
revealed. It's a lot of fun for the whole ward.
Like I said though, not everyone wants to
participate, so that's why you have the families sign up in advance. Our ward has done it
for years. Usually
around September people start saying, "Someone will be doing the Heart Family this
year, won't they?" It's fun.
