Scripture Skits

We did a skit activity using funny scriptures (we got the list at   http://www.davejennings.freeserve.co.uk/funnyscr.html). (Be careful to read each of the scripture references as some you would have to stretch too far to  get the funny part and some others I did not feel would be appropriate for  use with the youth - they might carry it too far.)

For two weeks prior to the activity, we told the youth they would need to bring their scriptures.  We divided our youth into groups of 4 with a leader assigned to each group.

Each youth picked a scripture reference from the pre-approved scriptures that were in a basket - folded so they couldn't pick favorites. The leaders were given a copy of what was to be funny about the scriptures (just in case they couldn't figure it out). Each group then went to separate rooms to work out their skit. They had 15 minutes to incorporate all of the scriptures (the funny part) into a skit.

The groups then came back together in the cultural hall. Before each group did their skit, we had them read their scriptures emphasizing the funny part so the rest of the group could figure out what the skit was about. They then did their skit (some leaders participated in the skit, others just supervised what was to be done. At first, people felt a little silly, but then once people saw what they were to do for sure, they relaxed and went with it and had a lot of fun.

When all the youth were done, they wanted to leaders to do a skit too, but we weren't prepared for that because the leaders had been with the youth.

Afterwards, we handed out Easter eggs filled with jelly beans, peanut M&M's, and starbursts. We told them they did an "Eggcellent" job on their skits, we thanked them for being the "stars" (starburst) for the evening, for being "jolly" (jelly beans) about it and being a little "nutty" (peanut M&M's). Of course we received a lot of moans from the puns, but the youth loved it.

We then had additional refreshments of popcorn (white and cheese), licorice and water. Since our group is small (we had about 17 youth show up), the skits went quickly and they had about 25-30 minutes just to enjoy the refreshments and socialize. It really went well, and I think every now and then the youth need an opportunity to socialize in a safe setting. The bishop was also pleased because the youth were opening and using their scriptures. He said that anytime the youth used the scriptures was a good thing.

If you do this activity, just make sure you explain it thoroughly so everyone understands what they are supposed to do.
