Roadshows in a Day

Our stake has done 24 hour roadshows for the past few years. On Friday night, representatives from each ward go to the stake center about 7 p.m.
They pull a theme and a setting out of hats. For instance, this year the over all theme of the roadshows was "Movies". From one hat, they would pull  a theme such as comedy, romance, drama, mystery, action, etc. From the other hat, they would pull a setting such as nursing home, island, game show,
outer space, etc. They are also given a list of about 15 words or phrases that must be used in each roadshow. These can be anything from Latin phrases that the kids don't understand, to names from the scriptures, or popular phrases from commercials or recent movies. It's really cute to see how creative they can be using them. There is a budget of about $50 for each of the wards to use.

Everyone then goes back to their own buildings to brainstorm and start working on scenery. They work until about 10 p.m. on Friday night and then meet again bright and early Saturday morning. They work all day until about 5 or so. Then everyone goes back over to the stake center. Everyone has a chance to practice once on the stage. Usually the wards order pizza for the youth for dinner. Then the roadshow starts at 7. Each ward has 15 minutes to set up and put on their show. They have an opening act going on while they are setting up.

We then give awards for best opening act, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and actress, best music, best message, best scenery, best
costumes, best script, and best overall. We have refreshments during the judging. This year members of the singles ward were the judges. They were
probably the most impartial people we could get.

This year we spent a good bit of time discussing this in our Stake Youth Committee meeting. We asked the youth if they wanted to change the format.
We suggested giving them a week or longer, or just doing it on Saturday. They all wanted to keep it just the way it is. It's a lot of work, but the
shows just keep getting better and better every year! It is the best attended activity of the stake.
