Mom: More apple pie anyone?

Sister: No thanks, but it was delicious. I hope the Wilsons and the Jones liked the ones we baked for them!

Dad: Anyone for a game of golf later? (pretends to swing club)

Brother: Sounds great dad, but we promised Widow Wiggenbottom we would do yard work for her today. At least SOME of us did. (Dirty look to Hector, who is sitting by himself)

Girlfriend: (flirty) Hector, come sit by me. (Hector walks babysteps and stops)

Hector: Its too far.

Brother 2: Too far? Its only a couple of steps. (takes 2 long strides to girlfriend, and starts flirting)

(Hector stands stage front looking dejected)

Mom: (goes to Hector) What's wrong son?

Hector: That’s what I want to know mom- Look at them. (everyone in background taking long strides) Look at me (baby steps) What is wrong with me?

SONG TUNE OF I CANT SAY NO from Oklahoma (sung by mom and Hector)

Mom: It ain't so much a question of not knowin what to do; you know'd what's right and wrong since you was five!
Hector: I heard a lot of stories and I reckon they are true; about how people lengthen out their stride.
Mom: I know you walk around here pretty slow.
Hector: But how I can go faster; I don’t know!

Together: I’m (he’s) just a kid who ain’t got stride; I’m in a terrible stew I’d love to walk around with pride; just like the other folks do.

H: When I see the others walk around; you know I want to be right in their place
M: But when he tries to walk like them; he somehow ends up flat upon  his face!
Both: Oh if I had one wish today; I know just what it would be
To walk like my family; then they’d be proud of me
I ain’t got stride! (Hector walks away dejected)

Mom: (to family) Poor Hector! I wish we could help,

Brothers (mocking) Poor Hector! Give it up mom; he’s hopeless.

Girlfriend (sighing) He is handsome!

Sis: He’s a lost cause!

Grandpa: He’s ---- a hoot! (grandpa laughs, coughs, chokes, grandma hits him on back with cane)

SONG; tune of How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria (sound of music) sung by family

How do you solve a problem like our Hector? How do you deal with someone so absurd?
How do you find a word describing Hector?
Dad: A regular Joe Girlfriend: A wonderful beau
Boys: A nerd!

Chorus /All: Many a time we all have tried to help him And teach him how to lengthen out his stride
But how do you take a man; and get him to understand
The answer to his problem lies inside
Oh how do you solve a problem like our Hector?
How can we help him lengthen out his stride?

Grandpa: I’d like to say a word on his behalf! Mom: Then say it grandpa!

Grandpa: Hector makes me laugh! (Gpa laughs, coughs, chokes, grandma hits with cane)

Repeat chorus

Hector comes out

Mom: Hector! We…

Hector: No its ok mom, you're right. I have to go out into the world and find my stride. It’s the only way!

(all go up to say goodbye)

Grandma: Here is a lunch for you dear. (hug)

Family leaves, Hector walks baby steps

Hector: At this rate Ill never get my stride.

Two little bunnies hop out, crying.

Hector: What's wrong little bunnies?

Bunnies: Were lost! Hey mister-

SONG tune of Once There Was A Snowman, sung by bunnies

Have you seen our mommy; we sure miss her
Can you help us find her; were so scared
When we find our mommy; we will kiss her
We know you'd help us find her; if you cared!

Hector: Hmmm; You know I'll bet your mom can't hear your little bunny voices. Let me try! (Yells loudly) Oh mother bunny! Oh mother bunny! (Mother bunny and lots of babies come out dancing to the bunny hop) Two little bunnies run up to mom

Bunnies: Mommy! He found you for us!

Mother Bunny: Thank you sir for finding my babies. (Bunnies leave)

(Hectors stride increases a little as he walks)

Hector: What is wrong with me? I feel different inside! (Hector is hit on head with acorn) H: Ouch!

(two squirrels run out crying)

H: hey you two, what's wrong?

Squirrels: Everything! Hey Mister-

SONG tune of Popcorn, sung by squirrels (as they sing, several squirrels come out gathering nuts)

We looked out our tree hole and what did we see;
all our friends are stealing nuts from our tree
This is not a very nice surprise;
taking all the nuts right before our eyes

They are taking armfuls and mouthfuls too;
Oh what are we going to do?
This really cant be so;
but it seems to be;
all our friends are stealing nuts from our tree!

Squirrels: Can you help?

H: Hmm, let me see. Hang on guys! (Hector huddles with thieves and talks)

H: Okay; they’ll stop stealing if you'll start sharing!

Squirrel 1: I guess we have been pretty stingy.

Squirrel 2: It’s a deal mister! (squirrels shake hands and start dividing nuts.

(as Hector walks, his stride is even bigger)

H: What is happening? Im starting to feel good about myself. (raccoon in a trap hobbles out)

Raccoon: Help help!

H: What is the matter?

R: Can’t you see?

SONG: Tune of hinges, sung by raccoon

I’m caught in this trap that the hunter did make
I think that my leg is going to break
cannot get out and it hurts when I try
Without you to help me I think I will die!

H: It was easy finding mother bunny and getting the squirrels to share. But how can I help you?

(voice from behind curtain) Remember son, you HAVE the key!

H: The key! (runs to bush pulls out huge cardboard key) I had the key all along; it is serving others! That’s how we lengthen our stride.  Each time I took the time to help someone my stride increased. This is great! I did it! (H walks around with huge strides)

Raccoon: Hey buddy, aren't you forgetting something?

H: Oh sorry! (unlocks trap; raccoon rubs leg; thanks H; limps off)

Family comes out.

Mom: Hector! (family starts running to Hector)

H: WAIT! (family stops; bump into each other) WATCH THIS!! (Hector takes big strides to family)

Grandpa: by golly; he's got the stride!

SONG Tune of When the Saints Go Marching In, sung by family and animals who come out also

He’s got the stride (he’s got the stride)
He’s got the stride (he’s got the stride)
And now he’s full of joy and pride
He found himself by serving others
And now Hectors got the stride!

(animals) When we were down (when we were down)
He helped us out (he helped us out)
And that’s what love is all about
It's being kind and helping others
And it lengthens out your stride

(all) He's got the stride (he's got the stride)
He's got the stride (he's got the stride)
He found it did come from inside
And he found it helping others
And now Hec-tors got-the – stride!
He’s got the stride!!!

Dad: come on everyone, it’s time to go home.

H: (to animals) It s hard to say good bye to all of you.

Animals: Goodbye Hector, we’ll miss you.

SONG Tune of So Long Farewell (sound of music)

Mom and Dad- There's a sad kind of feeling in the woods tonight- yes everyone is feeling blue
And up in the treetops a sad little bird is calling out a sad cukoo
(cuckoo;cuckoo)
And this is what he’s saying its time to stop our playing; and say
goodbye to you!

Bunnies: We found our mom and now we will not cry
And now it’s time for us to say goodbye (Bunnies hop off, waving)

Squirrels: We got our nuts and made some new friends too
And now it’s time to say goodbye to you (Squirrels go off waving)

Raccoon: I feel so good; I'm happy to be free
And now I say goodbye to you from me (raccoon limps off waving)

Family: We hope our play has helped you to decide
That you ; too; can lengthen out your stride.

Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye!
