Contributed by: beckyspoints@yahoo.comWe covered a garden hose with
tinfoil and draped it across quilting frame stands (one about every 6-8ft) so that it
covered the length of the gym. At one end we put a "tree of life" (fake
tree with white Christmas lights) and a beautiful framed picture of Christ next to the
tree. We lit the tree and the picture of Christ and this was the only light in the gym. We
put treats, wrapped in white tissue paper around the base of the tree. We played soft hymn
music in the background. We had opening exercises in another room and then we had a guest
speaker talk about Choice and accountability (our value for this month).
After the speaker we quietly led them to the far end of the gym. None of the girls
knew what was happening and they were very excited when the saw the "iron rod"
and "tree of life." It was rather dark on the far end of the gym and they kind
of stumbled over each other as they took hold of the iron rod. We had a microphone
at the front and the YW president read the questions. We modified the questions - taking
out any that may be asked at a temple recommend interview (we figured that those were none
of our business) and then we added about 15 additional questions involving modesty,
personal progress etc.. It was interesting to see the girls reactions as they
advanced toward the tree or stepped away from the rod.
In the middle of the activity one of the girls
stepped away from the rod and walked away from the activity. At first I felt angry (this
girl often has a poor attitude) but then I thought that in the real Iron rod vision,
everyone had their choice to press towards the tree or walk away into another paths. All I
could do as a YW leader is show them the way to the tree, after that it was their choice.
Anyway, we got really great feedback and it really seemed to make the girls think.

We put construction paper footsteps (in value colors)
in a line all around the walls of the gym. We typed up a bunch of Personal Progress
goals and put them next to some of the footsteps.
We gathered up a bunch of different types of shoes and displayed them with little
note cards next to them about how they relate to following in the Savior's footsteps:
Hiking boots--hike toward higher goals, furry slippers--soft, like the whisper of the Holy
Ghost...can't remember any of the other ones, but we had ballet shoes, rain boots, tennis
shoes--probably about 10 different shoes.
Then we did a little skit at the beginning called "Sole City" about a YW who
goes limping to her YW President and her "sole" hurts because she hasn't been
working on her Personal Progress lately. The YW Pres says that she can find her some
shoes to help her when she feels "defeet". So they go through some shoes
looking for just the right ones, etc.
Then we had the girls report or perform their projects and a speaker gave a short
talk at the end. It was great! It was a really nice night.
