Each year we do something called "Singing Trees"
(it was called "Singing Rocks" in my old stake.) This is a
highly spiritual activity that we do on one of the evenings
at camp. Before camp starts, each ward chooses a spiritual song
that goes with the camp theme for that year. They practice and
learn the song as a ward before camp. Then the night of
"Singing Trees" everyone grabs their flashlights and quietly
meets as wards in their assigned locations under the trees.
When it is time to begin, everyone turns off their flashlights
except for the ward who will sing first. They leave their
flashlights on, pointing up into the tree above them, as they
sing their beautiful song. Everyone else remains silent through
the whole activity, until it is time for them to sing. When
the first ward is done, they quietly turn their flashlights off
and the next ward turns their flashlights on and begins their
song. This continues until all the wards have sung their song.
Then all the YCLs quietly gather together with their flashlights
on and they sing a song that they have specially prepared. It
is so beautiful to hear these songs in the stillness of night,
with the sounds of nature to enhance the loveliness of it all.
Year after year, "Singing Trees" is consistently mentioned when
the girls are asked what are some of their favorite things about
camp.
