Hershey Kiss Roses

Here's the instructions I have.

1. Form the bud by taping 2 kisses bottom to bottom.

2. Drape a 5-inch square of pink (or other color!) plastic wrap over the top of one kiss, then gather the edges and twist them into a tail.

3. Tightly twist the top of a green pipe cleaner around the tail for the stem.

4. Add leaves by holding a strip of green tissue paper against the stem and rolling the pipe cleaner around the center of the strip. Trim the leaves so that they have pointy tips, and wrap green tape around the stem portion above the leaves to reinforce it.

Here's another, more realistic-looking, way to do it:

1. Form the bud by taping 2 kisses bottom to bottom. (I have hot glued them, too)

2. Cut a piece of colored cellophane about 7-8 inches long and 3-4 inches wide and lay it on the table horizontally. Place your bud on the right side and fold the top half of the cellophane over it, matching the bottom ends.  Roll they bud and cellophane, keeping the top loose and the bottom tight to form the rose with several layers of "petals".

3. Hot glue a wire stem to bottom of rose and wrap with floral tape to hold rose to the stem. Wrap bought leaves (or ones you use from silk flower bushes) onto the stem with the floral tape, continuing all the way down the wire stem.

You can make these last ones with almost any kind of wrapped candy. I have seen it done with wrapped hard candies and it looked really cute.

I had to make a billion of these for my sister in law's wedding, so let's me see if I can explain how to do it.

Supplies you need:

  • kisses
  • cellophane
  • floral tape
  • floral wire (the heavy duty kind)
  • leaves (you can purchase these pretty cheap at places like walmart, they come in little individual packages, usually over by the fabric)
  • scotch tape

First, get the color of cellophane you want and cut it into about 6 inch squares, then cut the wire to the desired stem length. (I found it easiest to poke the wire into the kisses before wrapping the cellophane around.)

Next, take 2 kisses and tape together by the bottoms so they are one piece, that looks like a bud.  Take your wire, and poke into the bottom of the kiss 'bud'.  Then, take your cellophane and wrap it tightly & smoothly around the kisses. I then would use my scotch tape and secure the cellophane at the bottom. You don't have to do this step, but I found it easier to work with if it was already secure. Take a stem of leaves, and position it where you want it behind the bud, with the excess wire going down along the wire stem of the rose.

Next, take your floral tape and start wrapping it around the base of kiss (where the scotch tape is), securing the leaf to the bud, and continue wrapping all the way down the wire, making sure to overlap the tape so it will stick to itself.

That's about it. It is pretty easy, but it takes longer than you think! I did it last year with my laurels and planned on each completing about 6 to take with them, and they only did about 1/2 that many. Maybe we were talking too much °Ü°

I have found that if you use wooden Kabob skewers (you can get them at the grocery store) instead of wire that the girls can put the roses together much faster and smoother. Just tape the Hershey Kisses together and stick the sharp end of the skewer into the kiss. The girls also have an easier time wrapping the floral tape because they can twirl the skewer between their fingers and the tape goes on much easier then trying to wrap it around a small wire. My daughter works at an after school program and she has had about 70 elementary aged kids make these for their moms for mothers day the last couple of years and even the younger kids were able to do it.

Tip:

It works really well if you put a dab of hot glue on the Hershey Kisses to glue them together instead of tape. Sometimes the tape allows the kisses to move as you are working with them. The hot glue does not. °Ü°

From our experience in making them last night, the 18 gauge stem is not thick enough...go with at least 22 gauge or a higher number...then fold the stem in half for greater strength...if you don't do this, you'll end up with a top heavy rosebud and they'll be wimpy rosebuds.  Instead of having a hook up beside the kisses, we wrapped the stem around the tip of the cellophane and hershey kiss and then secured real tight with the floral tape. Once you experiment with it, you'll get the idea and do what works for you.

Optional:  Poem to add to the rosebud:

Roses are beautiful
Chocolate is sweet
For your special day
A "kiss" rosebud treat
Happy Mothers Day

or

Roses are beautiful
Chocolate is sweet
So in honor of you
A "kiss" rosebud treat.
Happy Mothers Day

Use cardstock to print the poems on and attach with ribbon. They look especially nice when the rosebuds are completed to put in a basket with styrophome and fill with the rosebuds to take to church and hand out to the Mom's on Sunday......AT from Minnesota
